The Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Department is pleased to announce its Spring 2020
BAE Design Seminar Series
Design classes and the engineering capstone experience present a number of opportunities to both better prepare the students and to enhance learning outcomes. Specifically the process of working in design teams reinforces communication and helps to develop collaborative work behavior, which are highly valued characteristics that are often mentioned as priorities for graduates. By teaching collaborative work in a way that reinforces the core technical content of the degree, the underlying technical material is also reinforced.
The Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Department
is hosting a three-part seminar series for the spring that explores the
way design can be used throughout the curriculum to reinforce engineering principles, as well as better prepare graduates for the workforce
. The first of the seminars will discuss the way in which a project-based CAD class can be used both to prepare the students for formal design package preparation as well as discussing the appropriate scale for these projects. The second seminar will discuss changes in the expectations of young engineers and employers from a former faculty member in mechanical engineering technology who recently retired from his engineering position at General Motors. The third seminar will discuss taking the model of project based teaching and spreading it throughout the curriculum with a separate project during each year of an undergraduate program to reinforce the basic concepts presented during the academic year.
Speakers:
Stephen Abbadessa – February 7, 2020
Charles Maguire – March 6, 2020
Nicholas Krouglicof – April 10, 2020
All seminars will be held in 236 Barnhart Building from 11 AM – noon.
