Above, Penguin Random House associates teach teen leaders about publishing design and production
The power of connections is at the core of Read Alliance’s model, especially the connection between the young reader and their teen leader who serves as their reading tutor as well as a role model. We also view it as our responsibility to connect Teen Leaders with role models in various sectors in order to continue their growth as professionals as part of our Teen Leadership Program.

This winter, Read Alliance’s new partner, Penguin Random House, hosted three Teen Leader Development workshops featuring career paths within the publishing world. Teen Leaders learned about the thriving digital sector of publishing and the professionals who take print to digital screen, met editors and artists who combine their passions for art and literature to produce book cover art, and explored marketing and publicity strategies.

"I think the work Penguin Random House does with audio books is significant because some people are visual learners and some people are auditory learners," said workshop participant and Teen Leader Elisabet C. "I also saw that the work they do takes a lot of time and taps into other career areas such art and media production."

"We were excited to see a high level of engagement from teen leaders during our workshops," said Dannalie Diaz, Penguin Random House's Associate Manager of Digital Operations. "They asked a lot of insightful questions about our work, the industry at large, and how to apply for our internship program. Our partnership with Read Alliance allows us to fulfill Random House’s mission to inspire new generations of readers and, specifically through career-focused outreach, a new generation of future publishers."
Board Member Mark Moore, a partner at Reavis Page Jump LLP, joined the Read Alliance Board in 2013 and today chairs its Governance and Nominating Committee.

"When you know people are dedicated and care about the organization and its mission, it’s much easier to work together towards a common end," says Moore, who notes how special it is "seeing a Completion Ceremony, or the faces of children learning in the classroom that we get to see during class visits. Knowing people’s resources are being applied intelligently makes the experience very satisfying."

Moore is eager to see the Read Alliance model reach more young people, including beyond NYC. "The greatest challenge, to me, is...trying to figure out how to bring the organization beyond the five boroughs of New York City."

Laura Kikuchi, Director of Operations for Riley's Way Foundation:

"The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern takes the reader into a world so vivid that you'll be smelling caramel popcorn and spiced cider when you turn the page. It is a book that I can revisit over and over, each time being reminded that anything is possible with love, hope, and a little bit of magic."

Read Alliance is a proud partner of Riley’s Way Foundation and its Call for Kindness initiative, through which teens can receive up to $3000 for a project that inspires kindness in the community.
Phradiep B., Teen Leader:

"Blues for Mister Charlie by James Baldwin tells the truth in the most perfect way. It gives the reader the raw truth that’s not sugar-coated about racism in American society."
