Indian Health Service announced an update on the allocation of $95 million for telehealth under the CARES Act. The IHS will allocate $67 million to the IHS and Tribal health programs using existing distribution formulas for program increases in Hospitals and Health Clinics, Alcohol and Substance Abuse, and Mental Health funding. IHS and each Tribal health program will negotiate contract support costs after payments are made. The remaining $24 million will be used by the IHS for such activities, including to support nationwide outreach, education, training, technical assistance, and the acquisition of a clinical video telehealth solution.

S. 981 Protecting Tribal History, Respecting Tribal Consultation Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) introduced a bill on Mar 24, 2021 to stop the sale of the National Archives in Seattle, and require tribal consultation occur before any such sale of federal real property. The National Archives in Seattle stores historical documents for 272 federally recognized tribes.1
H.R. 1025 Kids Access to Primary Care Act of 2021 Representative Kim Shrier (D-WA) and others have drafted a bill that would require the Medicaid program to pay primary care physicians who specialize in pediatrics and family medicine at the Medicare rate rather than the Medicaid rate. This will increase access as Medicare payments are higher than Medicaid payments.
S. 914 Drinking Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Act of 2021 / S. Res. 141 A resolution recognizing the critical importance of access to reliable, clean drinking water for Native Americans and Alaska Natives and confirming the responsibility of the Federal Government to ensure such water access Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) introduced S.914 on March 23, 2021 to amend the Safe Drinking Water Act and the Federal Water Pollution Control Act to reauthorize programs under those Acts including supportive amendments to the Indian Reservation Drinking Water Program including the Columbia River Basin. These are supportive of the S.421 the Western Tribal Water Infrastructure Act of 2021.

Health and Human Services (HHS) Delays the Effective Date of the SUNSET Rule. One of the more troublesome rule changes that happened at the end of the previous administration set expiration dates for HHS regulations. This would have heavily impacted Indian Health Service regulations, and the only way to advert this impact would have been time-consuming internal processes to review each regulation. HHS has delayed the effective date for this rule to March 22, 2022 for further review in light of recent litigation challenging the SUNSET rule.
Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) issued a Dear Tribal Leader Letter on Mar 11, 2021 informing tribes that the agency is beginning its annual update of Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) scores. The update is planned for Sep 2021.
CMS Withdrawing Federal Approval of Medicaid Work Requirements. CMS recently notified New Hampshire and Arkansas of the agency's final decision to withdraw work requirements.2 The states of Arkansas and Georgia have threatened to sue the federal government over this change.3
