Name the Painting First.

How do I know when a painting is done?

For me, this really works and keeps me focused on the BIG IDEA. I start with a series - a theme, like "The Magic Circus" or "Soul Mates." Then I pick several titles that will work well with my series. I name the painting before I begin. When the painting resembles the title and I'm happy with it, I'm finished!

A painting image should communicate that title and concept of the series.

I start every exhibition this way...

  • Decide on the concept
  • Name the series
  • Write my artist statement
  • Select the titles for the paintings
