Midterms are Less Than 2 Weeks Away: Where Do Your Congressional Candidates Stand on Historic Preservation?

The midterm elections are only 11 days away. If you haven't already, be sure to check out Preservation Action's 2018 Historic Preservation Congressional Candidate Survey Results!

Over the last few months Preservation Action surveyed congressional candidates in all 50 states an effort to keep Americans informed on where their candidates for office stand on the national historic preservation program, and to educate candidates on key historic preservation programs.

We received responses from nearly 150 congressional candidates, representing 37 states and the District of Columbia.  The results show historic preservation is a bipartisan issue and recognized as an important federal policy initiative by candidates from across the country.

Check out our website to learn more about our survey and to see how candidates in your state responded. In addition to reviewing the survey results, we encourage you to research where your members of Congress stand on historic preservation.   Check  out these additional resources to learn more.  Remember to VOTE PRESERVATION Nov. 6th!

Join US/ICOMOS for a Soiree to Celebrate and Protect United States World Heritage Sites and National Monuments

Wrap up the National Trust's annual PastForward conference in San Francisco with good times and more good works! The US/ICOMOS Soiree to Celebrate and Protect United States World Heritage Sites and National Monuments will be held at the historic General's Residence at Fort Mason Center on Thursday, November 15, 2018, at 5 pm. The soiree will include heavy hors d'oeuvres, wine, heritage music & dance, and live painting. Raffles and auctions will benefit the effort to save National Monuments and World Heritage Sites. Every dollar spent, including tickets, is tax deductible and used for the campaign (all event costs are underwritten by generous sponsors).

Urgent action is needed to protect the cultural and natural treasures of U.S. World Heritage Sites. The Grand Canyon, for example, is threatened with the construction of a cable car and resumption of uranium mining. Oil well fracking is proposed near Chaco Culture National Historical Park. On December 4, 2017, President Trump signed proclamations that would cut the federally protected monument lands within Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante by two million acres. Nineteen more National Monuments are threatened, including Berryessa Snow Mountain, Carrizo Plain, Giant Sequoia, Mojave Trail, and San Gabriel Mountains. Land cut from National Monuments will be available for oil and gas drilling, mining, and commercial uses.  Support the protection of U.S. World Heritage Sites and National Monuments by helping us to save these national and world treasures.
