 Worship this Week: At the Table
As we continue our sermon series about what we learn at God's table, we encounter strong words from Jesus in
Luke 14:15-24 about the invitation God extends to all people to join God's feast. How do you respond to God's open invitation? Who are you reluctant to invite in return? Amy Starr Redwine's sermon is titled "From God to You to...Who?"and the first lesson, read by lay worship leader John Starr, is
Isaiah 35:1-10.
Music Notes
Felix Mendelssohn's (1809-1847) lovely chorale cantata, Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten, on the music and words of Georg Neumark's Trostlied (consolation song), will be heard throughout the service. An ever popular hymn, we are familiar with Catherine Winkworth's translation "If thou but suffer God to guide thee." Mendelssohn's admiration for J.S. Bach is evident in how the work is constructed, in four movements based on and around a chorale tune (one which Bach had used in several compositions). Mendelssohn treats the chorale tune in various ways. The first movement (our Introit) is the chorale presented plainly in four part harmony, the second (the Anthem), elegant counterpoint over a drawn out cantus firmus or tune of the chorale in the bass line. The third movement (the Offertory) features a soprano soloist alone, while the final movement (our closing Hymn) features a lively instrumental part, while the congregation and choir sing the melody of the chorale in unison. This work can also be heard on the Friday, Nov. 9 collaboration program, "Consolation," here at the Covenant.

by Diana Butler Bass. Join us for a conversation about Bass's latest book, which explores how gratitude can be a path to greater connection with God, with others, with the world, and with our own souls. You do not need to have read the book to join the conversation. All are welcome!

elp set up, cook and/or serve chili, decorate your cars and hand out candy, welcomeguests and clean up. Each year we welcome over 300 guests into our parking lot for a time of community, connection, and fellowship.
Food collection for the Covenant Food Pantry this
Sunday.
This Sunday the children will collect food and financial donations for our Covenant Food Pantry, open the last Wednesday and Friday of each month, Thursday afternoons in the Connection Center for students, and for emergencies. The pantry is in need of Spaghettios, pasta sauce,pasta,jelly/jam,peanut butter,chili(not pork & beans),corn-muffin mix, canned veggies, and fruit and pudding cups.

littlest kiddos (Infant-Pre-K) into our nursery for playtime and snack in our nursery located on the Lower Level of the Connection Center.
Our
Middle School and High School youth are encouraged to attend and participate in worship, each Sunday and complete and return a Worship Reflection to get prizes!

The Church of the Covenant and the CWRU Music Department
presents a unique collaboration program on November 9, 2018, celebrating significant anniversaries: the 100th anniversary of the World War I Armistice, and the 50th anniversary of the McGaffin Carillon. A highlight of the concert will be the world premiere of a commissioned work by composer David Childs in honor of these anniversaries. Dr. Childs will be present for the first public performances of the work and will speak about his composition on Sunday, November 11 at The Church of the Covenant. The program, titled Consolation, features musical settings of texts intended to console those suffering or those mourning the loss of loved ones. Performing ensembles include Case Concert Choir, Church of the Covenant Chancel Choir, and the Consolation Chamber Orchestra.Tickets for the 8 p.m. concert on November 9 may be purchased online here.
