Planting Party

Planting party Tuesday, May 19 from 1-4. Get a hands on introduction to permaculture in our vegetable garden. Learn what plants we have so far and learn how and what to weed. Sign up for garden watering. Soak up the fresh air and let spring sink farther into your bones. Meet at the raised beds at the southwest corner of church. Postponed if pouring rain.

Spring Clean-Up

The snow is finally gone so that means time to clean up our beloved building and grounds!

There will be a building wide Spring Cleanup day on Saturday May 30th. Note that this is the Saturday AFTER Memorial Day weekend.

As this has been a particularly hard winter for dust and dirt, in addition to our normal activities and small repairs, we will be concentrating on building wide cleanliness.  In particular, our Raihn guest rooms and hallways need a good spring cleaning. Areas around windows, corners of ceilings, all flat surfaces, could use detail work. And scuff marks on the floors, spots on rugs need attention.

Bring your favorite cleaning solutions and we will also supply some, too. It will be great to have a freshly cleaned facility for our next Raihn rotation beginning June 14th.  

Please let the house committee know of any other cleaning or small repairs that you would like to have addressed. If you would like to lend a hand with this cleaning, minor repairs or smoke alarm/emergency lighting checks, please let us know or just show up!  Morning snacks and a light lunch will be provided.

Sign up for RAIHN* Week

June 14-21 is our next RAIHN Week, when First Universalist Church will host temporarily homeless families, providing them with a safe place to stay and good food. You may ask, didn't we just have RAIHN Week? True, this Host Week is only two months from the last one, but we moved up a month to allow a new Host Congregation time to get organized.  This means that we won't be hosting in the summer, and September 13-20 with be our last Host Week for the year.  Next year the Host Weeks will be more evenly spaced. 

A training session for new volunteers will be held Tuesday, June 9th, 6:30-8:30 PM at the First Unitarian Church, 220 S. Winton Rd, Rochester. Even if you can't attend RAIHN training, you are welcome to volunteer for the following activities:

• set up
• clean up
• launder bedding

Remembering Lauretta

Friends of Lauretta Young are invited to gather in the adult lounge on Wednesday May 13 from 6:30 to 8pm to share stories, thoughts and memories about her.  You are welcome to bring snacks and beverages to enjoy.  Brief readings will be presented to open and close our time together.

SAVE THE DATE:

MAY 31: BOOK GROUP will meet on Sunday, May 31 at noon in the Adult Lounge. This month's book is A Town Like Alice by Nevil Shute. In the book, a newly wealthy English woman returns to Malaya to build a well for the villagers who helped her during war. Thinking back, she recalls the Australian man who made a great sacrifice to aid her and her fellow prisoners of war. Everyone is welcome to attend.  Contact Shirley Bond or Sarah Singal.

SUNDAYS: One way to get involved in church is to be a Keeper of the Flame. About half an hour before the service the Keeper sets out the chalice, candles, stones for joys and sorrows. It is a quiet time to prepare for the congregation's hour together. No climbing is involved. Afterward the Keeper returns the items to the Keepers' cupboard. Each person is Keeper every 4-6 weeks. Please see Michael VanArsdale if you are interested. Couples can do this together.
