The Pierre Area Chamber of Commerce had an exciting month in October as we released our new campaign, Loyal2Local. We have been humbled by the overwhelmingly positive response from the community and we are excited to move forward with branding the Chamber and its membership as Loyal2Local.
Loyal2Local builds off the vision of the Chamber, where businesses and organizations support each other and help one another succeed. This new campaign expands on our typical messaging of "Shop Local," it allows the Chamber to recognize all our membership from retail and service-oriented businesses, to organizations and non-profits, and even to our individual members. We want the Pierre and Ft. Pierre residents to know that the Chamber and our membership are Loyal2Local. If you haven't joined us yet, now is a great time to declare you are loyal to our community and all businesses and organizations who have chosen to invest in our area. The holiday season is quickly approaching and will be here before you know it! The chamber is continuing many of our favorite traditions this holiday season. They are all focused on celebrating our community and reminding our residents about the wonderful opportunities we have right here.
Coming in November, our 18th Annual Parade of Lights will be marching down our streets on Monday, November 19th to kick off the holiday festivities. Pierre's most famous holiday tradition, Christmas at the Capitol, will begin with a lighting ceremony on Tuesday, November 20th - just before Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 22nd. November 23rd is Black Friday, and the Fort Pierre Tree Lighting Ceremony is held that evening. Small Business Saturday is on November 24th; the Chamber will be reminding the Pierre and Ft. Pierre communities to shop small and support our local retail stores as they buy Christmas presents and holiday favors.
Don't forget about the Chamber's Annual Celebration and Community Christmas Party on December 13th, featuring an all-girl trio: Divas Through the Decades! They will perform the greatest female musical hits from the 1940's to today. Many of our members buy a table or two and hold their office holiday party that night where there is a festive atmosphere and fabulous music - it's a great way to network and celebrate. As you start thinking about your Christmas shopping or putting together your own Christmas wish list please be sure to keep our local retailers in mind. We truly are blessed to have so many wonderful options. Get up early on Black Friday for the specials and be sure to check out the more unique stores the next day on Small Business Saturday. We encourage everyone to be Loyal2Local and buy as many of your gifts as possible in Pierre/Ft. Pierre. That brings holiday cheer to everyone!

There's been a buzz in the air around Pierre for the last several weeks. And you don't have to listen too closely to realize that buzz is coming from private jets heading for Pierre Regional Airport.
Mid-October to mid-November is peak season at our airport. During the heat of the pheasant hunting season, Pierre experiences dozens of private flights a day. In fact, each fall, the shooting sports industry brings hundreds of private jets to town, fills up our commercial planes, and causes our car rental companies to boost their inventories with additional SUVs.
I like to think of Pierre Regional Airport as the front door to central South Dakota. We work hard to keep the terminal and airport grounds professional and inviting. This year, we have added a boarding bridge for our commercial travelers, and placed a sign on it to welcome people to the City of Pierre. We are very appreciative of the Chamber's welcome committee who camps out at the airport to further roll out that safety orange carpet for our out-of-town guests.
While this is certainly the busiest season for our airport, the City works to make the airport appealing all year long to a variety of audiences. Just this week, we finished paving the taxi lanes in the newly developed spray plane hangar area. And we are pleased that Avera Careflight is lifting off.
Many of these airport improvements that aid private-sector services in Pierre are dependent on an annual stipend from the federal government. The federal government will only give us that stipend if we have 10,000 passengers a year.
With that in mind, if you think the hunting industry, or ag industry or the healthcare industry is important to Pierre, I encourage you to fly from Pierre Regional Airport. Our passenger numbers directly fuel the City's ability to support those industries.

Fort Pierre Mayor Gloria Hanson's Report |
The people in this community never cease to amaze me. In March of this year, we were given the opportunity to be involved in a "Healthy Hometown" initiative, a program sponsored by Wellmark, Inc. designed to help communities identify options and priorities to encourage a healthier lifestyle for residents. Just six months later, on October 17, Fort Pierre was presented with one of three statewide awards: The 2018 Healthy Hometown Community Award. The award, which was also presented to the cities of Rapid City and Sioux Falls, includes $5,000 to help continue the work. The City of Pierre was one of six finalists.
The first Healthy Hometown meeting in Fort Pierre was attended by 22 area citizens, representing a broad range of occupations, ages and interests. A community garden was just one goal identified by the full committee, but because of its critical timeframe, it became the top priority. A community garden task force, led by Ron Schreiner, identified an appropriate site, researched best gardening practices and community garden policies, laid out the site, and began conversations with vendors. With assistance from the City of Fort Pierre, the site was prepared, and a waterline installed. Local businesses and individuals provided funding for start-up costs, including 24 raised beds. A local contractor provided free topsoil. Miraculously, most of the beds were ready for planting by early June and produced a bountiful crop.
Besides the successful community garden, other noteworthy achievements in Fort Pierre which were identified by the award included:
- Enhanced a weekly farmers' market by creating a sidewalk festival atmosphere through children's activities, live music, meals and beveraes, and a variety of vendors
- Rehabilitated 5300 feet of recreational trail and installd a bike repair station
- Developed a nw community park wit playground equipment
The Fort Pierre Healthy Hometown committee, chaired by Dr. Marty Allison and Dr. Michelle Hofer, is ongoing. Future priorities identified by the committee include completing the community garden with a security fence and picnic tables, encouraging more activity through bicycling and walking, conversations with food vendors to provide ideas to promote healthier eating, and expand on an edible orchard concept.
Congratulations, residents of 2018 Healthy Fort Pierre! You have good reason to be proud of your community.

PEDCO members are invited to attend the Board of Directors Annual Meeting at Noon Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2018, at the Pierre Area Chamber of Commerce, 800 W. Dakota Ave.
The main purpose of the annual meeting is to elect nominees to the board of directors. A nominating committee will develop the slate of nominees to be printed in the November newsletter. Members interested in consideration by the nominating committee may contact PEDCO at [email protected].
The annual meeting will also include an update on corporation activities, the nomination of officers, consideration of any proposed changes to the Bylaws, and the presentation of the corporation's annual Vernon Award for Excellence.

|
Traditional retailers team with digital natives
A growing number of retailers are partnering with digitally driven brands to create new shopping experiences, including Walgreens, which recently teamed with beauty subscription service Birchbox. Target has teamed with several digital partners, including Casper and Quip, and Nordstrom's newest partners include Allbirds and Reformation. Forbes (10/23)
Walmart looks to lighting, floor wax to cut costs
Walmart has switched its stores to a less-expensive floor wax that requires less buffing, a move that will save the retailer more than $20 million a year, Chief Financial Officer Brett Biggs said. The company is focused on small changes to create big savings -- swapping out fluorescent bulbs for LED lights over time is forecast to ultimately save $200 million. CNBC (10/16)
Study: Retailers playing music may be underpaying
Retailers using consumer streaming music services such as Spotify and Apple Music are underpaying by as much as $2.65 billion, Nielsen Music reports. About 21 million smaller businesses around the globe are using the unlicensed music. The Wall Street Journal (10/15)
Google developing mobile inventory searches for retailers
Google is working to develop map-enabled local product inventory searching, a tool that would allow consumers to find stores selling specific products. The goal of the technology is to make shopping more efficient and to allow it to better compete with online sales. CoStar Group (10/15)
Year-round deals to tamper Black Friday consumer interest
At least 60 retailers will remain closed on Thanksgiving Day, reports BestBlackFriday.com, as year-round discounts and online shopping have reduced consumer interest in Black Friday shopping. Online sales were up 16.9% on Black Friday in 2017, while brick-and-mortar visits were down 4.5%, RetailNext reports. Business Insider (10/13)
Walmart stores to offer PayPal banking services
PayPal customers will be able to make deposits and withdrawals from their online accounts at Walmart stores by early November. The service, which is the first of its kind for PayPal in brick-and-mortar locations, will carry a $3 fee and will also be available to PayPal Cash Mastercard holders. CNBC (10/11)
Retailers must meet Gen Z expectations
As Gen Z members become customers, retailers will need to change to meet their demands, including for multichannel commerce and fast shipping. To do so, retailers must consider that Gen Z members believe in authenticity, are dedicated digital users and multitask. E-Commerce Times (10/9)
Domino's "pizza theater" concept sets new sales record
A remodeled Domino's Pizza restaurant in Pecos, Texas, sold 8,500 pizzas during its grand reopening week, setting a new record for the chain. The store boasts the company's new "pizza theater" concept, with an open kitchen that lets customers watch as their food is prepared. CNBC (10/8)

An Enchanted Christmas is the theme for the 38th annual Christmas at the Capitol. Trees are on display from 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. every day from November 21st through December 25th. The trees are decorated by businesses, schools, churches and communities from across the state. The lighting ceremony is November 20th in the Capitol Rotunda and Pie Day is December 8th. Many other parts of the capitol building and grounds will be decorated, including the marble staircases. On many evenings and weekends, musical artists from around the state will perform at the capitol, adding to the Christmas spirit. The two-story South Dakota tree featured in the Capitol rotunda will be decorated by South Dakota Special Olympics this year.
There are many events happening in the Pierre area during the holiday season. For information on any events check out the calendar on the Pierre Area Chamber of Commerce website - www.pierre.org. If you have an event to promote, please add it to the calendar. It looks like we will have a full schedule of events for the visitors coming to our area.
Have you recently received exceptional service? Do you constantly see an employee provide exceptional service to their customers? The Pierre Convention and Visitors Bureau does believe in outstanding hospitality and we encourage visitors and locals in our area to nominate someone for exceptional service and warm hospitality. What happened to Thanksgiving? Does it just get lumped in with Halloween now? Christmas? Some of my Facebook friends like to decorate for Christmas right after Halloween, they say it makes them happy, and I believe in being happy during the holidays... but what about Thanksgiving? The smell of the turkey cooking, the debate over traditional stuffing or the new improved recipe from Pinterest, and the right football team (Go Vikings!) winning the game. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays and this year it will be even better, as our oldest daughter will be home for the first time since August!
November seems to be a forgotten month, pheasant season is well under way, Halloween is over, and Christmas is only a month away. Typically, November is the beginning of the holiday shopping, Black Friday, Shop Small Saturday, and Cyber Monday are a few of the BIG shopping days. I encourage everyone to try and shop small this year. The Pierre Area Chamber announced in October our commitment to being Loyal2Local. As you start your holiday shopping, I hope you will think local first. We realize you cannot get everything you need in town - but our message is bigger than that. Support the businesses that want to make Pierre/Ft. Pierre a better place to live; the individuals that are taking a risk and hoping their business will be successful are all depending on US.
The Parade of Lights will kick of the week of Thanksgiving, Monday November 19th at 6pm. The tree lighting ceremony at the Capital is on Tuesday, November 20th, and remember to shop small on Saturday November 24th! I hope you have a very happy Thanksgiving!
