Or Shalom At Home

It's week 11 of our online photo feature, Or Shalom At Home. Each week the newsletter features a photo of one member/member household sheltering in place or venturing outside. Eventually we will create an album on the Or Shalom website documenting how our community waited out the pandemic.

We invite you to submit a photo, along with any message or caption, to Lillian. Photos can be posed, candid, jokey, somber. Please identify everyone in the picture (use first names only if you like). Or Shalom's Beautiful New Torah Table
which we will use with joy some day soon

Or Shalom member Ken Seidman, a master carpenter, has built for us a Torah reading table. It is made of sustainably-sourced California wood and designed to easily be taken apart and reassembled, so that it can travel with us wherever we worship. The top is inlaid with a quotation from Proverbs, and the base decorated with an olive branch. Rabbi Katie, Vavi Toran, Gary Hauser, and Nitza Agam worked on the project with Ken.

As Nitza wrote, "This Torah table is now part of the promise of Or Shalom for the time that we will emerge from isolation to the joy of gathering in person again." You can read the rest of her lovely essay about the process of creating the table and the significance of its parts here.

Summer Film Festival: #ZoomChallah Bake
Live virtual event via Zoom and the JFI Screening Room
Friday, July 17 at 10:00 am

Emmy-nominated filmmaker Tiffany Shlain has been doing a very popular #ZoomChallahBake every Friday since the pandemic began. Each week she brings on special guests to talk about everything from the pandemic to the protests to technology and art, all while making challah with people around the world.

She'll be doing a very special bake for  the Jewish Film Festival's " Cinegogue Summer Days," featuring two special guests: Rabbi (/comedian) Sydney Mintz from the Bay Area and Prince
Challah from Berlin.

Don't worry if you have never made bread or challah before. She'll teach you. It's easy. It's hea ling. We all look forward to baking bread together!

Tisha B'Av 2020 - Broken Open
Wednesday, July 29 at 8pm

Tisha B'Av (the 9th of the month of Av) is the Jewish fast day marking the anniversary of the destruction of the ancient Israelite temple.  In today's practice, the day is not just about mourning an ancient pilgrimage site, but rather about marking the many ways our world is broken.  From that difficult reckoning, we begin the long journey of healing and transformation that culminates at the end of September this year on Yom Kippur, the day of Atonement.  2020 has revealed profound brokenness, but our hope is that through this painful awareness, we can begin to deeply transform ourselves and our world for the better.

Jewish Voices Support Black Lives Matter

Or Shalom has added our name to hundreds of Jewish congregations and organizations in signing an anti-racist statement endorsing the Black Lives Matter movement.

The statement was circulated by the Jewish Social Justice Roundtable. It was prompted by a request from Black leaders for a broad-based letter of support from America's Jews to counter a narrative that would divide Jews and Blacks during this time of social upheaval.

The text and signatories of the letter can be found on the Medium website.

Or Shalom members are now needed to show up--either by sending a photograph, attending a July 21 action, and/or participating in an August 11 action--as Faith in Action comes together to ensure that some of our most vulnerable neighbors are housed.
