Johnson County STEM Festival Brings Community Together

The evening of October 10th marked the SE Iowa STEM Hub's first annual Johnson County STEM  Festival, bringing together nearly 1,400 children, parents, and STEM enthusiasts from across the region. The Kirkwood Regional Center at the University of Iowa proved to be an excellent facility to host the jam-packed event.

Dozens of Johnson County businesses, nonprofits, and educational institutions organized booths for festival-goers to interact with. The University of Iowa's National Advanced Driving Simulator demonstrated the effects of texting and driving by having kids get behind the wheel. No licence required! Integrated DNA Technologies showed the kids how to collect and examine DNA samples. Perhaps the biggest hit of the night was the night was South Slope's Absolute Science show, featuring live demonstrations of captivating science experiments. Each activity certainly gave viewers the opportunity to learn about career fields in STEM.

Johnson County is known as one of the most diverse counties in Iowa, and its STEM Festival was no exception. Of all the attendees, an estimated 52.4 percent were of minority racial or ethnic background. The Governor's STEM Advisory Council strives to

Successes Celebrated in Annual STEM Advisory Council Evaluation Report

The annual Iowa STEM Evaluation Report was released this month by the Iowa Governor's STEM Advisory Council. The report illustrates the progress of student interest and achievement of STEM education and workforce development in Iowa.

"Engaging, relevant STEM education is changing the lives of students across Iowa," Gov. Kim Reynolds said. "The annual STEM Evaluation Report demonstrates how STEM is transforming schools and our future workforce. With the growth of well-paying STEM jobs expected to outpace other occupations, STEM Council education programs provide teachers with the tools they need to inspire young people from preschool through high school to prepare for STEM careers."

The report provides statistics about the Advisory Council's STEM Scale-Up initiatives:

  • Iowa Scale-Up students scored an average of 2 points higher in National Percentile Rank on the Iowa Assessments in mathematics and reading and 3 points higher in science.
  • 91 percent of Scale-Up educators feel they now have more confidence teaching STEM topics.
  • Over 1,000 Iowa students participated in STEM BEST, involving partnerships between 23 schools and school districts and hundreds of employers.

"The results of this report will have a significant impact on STEM education and workforce development for years to come as it will help guide future STEM Council programming and projects in Iowa," Accumold President and CEO Roger Hargens, co-chair of the STEM Council, said.

This year, the Southeast Iowa STEM Advisory Board welcomed three new members, Emily Strattan, Dan D'Alessandro, and Kate Moreland. Linda Zachar, an Advisory Board member for __ years, has assumed a chair position as of this year. We welcome all new Advisory Board members and wish them success as they strive to advance STEM in Southeast Iowa.

Kate Moreland

Her focus is developing a talent pipeline to ensure the students in this region are informed about career paths, leading to a strong workforce in the future. As a board member, Kate hopes to advance opportunities for underserved populations through STEM education.

Dan D'Alessandro
was an Electrical Engineer at Deere & Company for 40 years of service before his retirement in 2016. Through both his engineering and his management experience, Dan hopes to leverage his skills to advance Iowa STEM as a board member. He volunteers at FIRST events in Iowa and Illinois and serves as Award Chair on the Quad City Engineering & Science Council (QCESE). Dan is a strong believer in nurturing a STEM learning ecosystem from early on and taking that education beyond the classroom. A vital part of this ecosystem is project-based and hands-on learning.

Emily Strattan

Welcoming UI Students to the SE Iowa STEM Team

Kawther Rouabhi
is a freshman at the University of Iowa College of Engineering pursuing a degree in Computer Science and Engineering. She was born and raised in Iowa City and graduated from City High School last May. Her role on the Iowa STEM Team includes social media outreach and compiling reports, as well as assisting with implementing the STEM Hub's programs and initiatives. During her time in this position, Kawther hopes to give back to her own Iowa City community that supported her personal journey to pursue a STEM field. In doing so, she hopes to focus her efforts on increasing the participation of racial and ethnic minorities in STEM curriculum, specifically advancing the involvement of underrepresented populations in advanced math courses.

Sujit Singh

He has an Associate's of Liberal Arts degree with a focus on Public Relations and a Bachelor's in Communication Studies with a focus on Television Production. Sujit's role on the STEM Hub Team includes compiling data and promotions of the Hub's initiatives with social media. During his time in this role, Sujit hopes use his video production experience to expand STEM to those it has not yet reached. He hopes to use his video projects to spark interest in the STEM fields. Sujit discovered his interest for STEM later in life and wants to use his skills to extend these opportunities to young people to discover their interests from a young age.
