Lead, Paper, Glass & Tea at
Old South Meeting House

The Old South Meeting House (310 Washington St.) is hosting the Paul Revere Lecture Series: Lead, Paper, Glass & Tea on each Wednesday of September. The series is being presented by the Paul Revere Memorial Association. All four lectures begin at 6:30 pm and are free.

On Sept. 12th, the lecture will focus on American patriot Paul Revere, who "is wrapped in the swirling mixture of myth and poetry through which history often descends, but as a craftsman he left behind more tangible traces as well." Gerald W. R. Ward, Senior Curator of American Decorative Arts and Sculpture, Emeritus, at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, will speak about Revere's Sons of Liberty Bowl, crafted in 1768 to commemorate the "Glorious 92" legislators who bravely opposed the King of England and Parliament.

Learn how the Townshend Acts set the stage for the Boston Massacre. Learn how the Townshend laws impacted Bostonians  in an interactive, first-person presentation featuring costumed actors from The Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum.

On Sept. 26th,  University of New Hampshire Professor of History Eliga Gould will talk of how the Townshend Acts eventually destroyed Britain's American empire. By 1768, a mere one year after the Acts were enacted,  observers began to wonder whether Britain's days as an imperial power were numbered.

Theatrical Dance Performances in Washington Street Storefront Skewers Fashion and Beauty Tropes

Catherine Siller's "Are You Buying?" is a new theatrical free dance performance that will be taking place within a Downtown Crossing storefront window!

"As a young teen and adult I spent more time and money that I'd like to admit trying to get the kind of flawless complexion promoted in all the ads," said Siller. "Finally, I realized that maybe I couldn't get a 'flawless' complexion because the ads kept raising the bar -- there were always new 'problems' that only their products could fix."

Siller's live performances combine real-time video with pre-recorded animations that create characters and objects that appear and dissolve.

The performance tells the story of a fashion mannequin who dreams she has it all while traveling back in time through fashion and beauty advertisements from today to the 1920s. As the show continues the mannequin chases the perfect look from each generation.

Siller's performances are in promotion with the ILLUMINUS Light Festival, occurring in Downtown Boston on Nov. 2 and 3. The performances are supported by the Boston Foundation's Next Steps for Boston Dance grant, Downtown Boston BID and LuminArtz.

Performances will be happening from 6 to 8:30 pm on Sept. 12th through Sept. 15th inside the storefront at 349 Washington St.

"We are excited about the ILLUMINUS Light Festival returning to Downtown Boston. We have rotating installations highlighting local artists leading up to the festival on November 2 and 3, 2018," said Anita Lauricella, BID Public Realm Senior Planner

Meet Sergeant Stephen Moy:
Supervisor for Downtown Boston's
Community Service Office

Sgt. Stephen Moy was recently named the supervisor for the Boston Police Department's District A-1 Community Service Office.

Moy joined the Boston Police in 2003 and has worked in the South End, Jamaica Plain and with District A-1, which includes Downtown Boston.

"One of the things I look forward to in the Community Service Office is having the time to go in-depth into community issues," said Moy. "Here in the Community Service Office we have the luxury of time to dissect an issue and join with non-law enforcement officials to move issues in a more positive light."

Moy said the office looks to resolve quality-of-life issues within the district through resources like homeless shelters, hospitals, outreach programs, along with the criminal justice system.

He is also proud of and enjoys working in Downtown Boston. "One of my favorite things about Boston now is all the new outdoor spaces. Growing up in Boston there wouldn't be much going on Downtown after business hours. But now there are so many things happening into the evening hours. Boston has become somewhere great to visit day and night."

If you have a question or concern and would like to contact the Boston Police District A-1 Community Service Office please call 617-343-4824. You may also email Sgt. Moy at [email protected]. In emergencies please call 911.
