Companies Under Fire For Hawking Fake Autism, Cerebral Palsy Treatments
[Source: Disability Scoop]

Federal officials are taking action against a doctor and two companies for charging thousands of dollars for therapies they "deceptively" claimed could treat autism, cerebral palsy and other conditions.

The Federal Trade Commission said that Dr. Bryn Jarald Henderson and his companies - Regenerative Medical Group and Telehealth Medical Group - marketed stem cell therapy injections as a treatment for multiple conditions even though there was no evidence to support the claims.

How Schools Can Optimize Support for Children with ADHD
[Source:  Science Daily]

New research gives the clearest guidance yet on how schools can best support children with ADHD to improve symptoms and maximize their academic outcomes.

The study, led by the University of Exeter and involving researchers at the EPPI-Centre (University College London), undertook a systematic review which analysed all available research into non-medication measures to support children with ADHD in schools.

As Demand For ABA Therapy Increases, Investors Buy In
[Source: Disability Scoop]

Autism therapy is attracting significant attention from private equity firms, a trend that could fund rapid expansion of clinics, but is also raising concerns about quality of care.

Investors say the rising prevalence of autism, as well as increased insurance coverage for applied behavior analysis, or ABA therapy, is driving their interest. Some autism advocates

For Preemies, Skin to Skin Contact Affects Hormone Levels
[Source: Science Daily]

For premature infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), skin-to-skin contact with parents influences levels of hormones related to mother-infant attachment (oxytocin) and stress (cortisol) - and may increase parents' level of engagement with their infants.

Promoting early contact and parental engagement might help to lessen the risk of neurodevelopmental delay associated with preterm birth and NICU care, according to the exploratory study by Dorothy J. Vittner, PhD, RN, CHPE, of University of Connecticut

Green Filter May Boost Reading Speed for Dyslexic Kids
[Source: Psych Central]

Green filters appear to increase reading speed for children with dyslexia, according to a new study by Brazilian and French researchers who published their findings in the journal Research in Developmental Disabilities.

The researchers suggest the filters may help reduce visual stimuli available for central nervous system processing, thereby increasing reading speed. The filters show no effect on non-dyslexic children.

Screening Tool May Identify Root Of Autism Behavior Problems
[Source: Disability Scoop]

Kids with autism often struggle with behavior issues, but researchers say a simple new questionnaire may be able to determine if an underlying medical condition is actually the cause.

The 17-item survey is designed to help spot gastrointestinal problems in those on the spectrum.

Mouse's First Halloween - Book for Use in Speech Therapy
[Source:  Scanlon Speech Therapy]

On my daughter's first Halloween, she received the book titled Mouse's First Halloween. Since she was only 3 months old and a little too young to really appreciate this adorable book, I, like any good speech-language pathologist, used it during my sessions with my clients. My preschoolers LOVED It! (2014 Update - Kerri, who is almost 26 months old - LOVES IT! 2015 Update - Kerri, still loves it.)

There are so many fun activities you can do with leaves, too! Today I'm sharing over 20 activities with leaves from myself and some of my favorite kid bloggers.

PT Corner: Using Visual Cues to Promote Gross Motor Skills
[Source: The Inspired Treehouse]

Teaching a child to do a new gross motor skill, especially a highly coordinated one that involves crossing midline or use of both sides of the body, can be a challenge. If you don't believe me, try getting a kindergartener to do a jumping jack for the first time.

As therapists, we often use cueing to help kids through these awkward first tries. Auditory cues like "make your body look like and 'X' and now and 'I'" work for some. Other times,

OT Corner:  Visual Perception Development
[Source:  The Anonymous OT]

You might have heard the saying, "you can't see the forest for the trees," which seems to fit nicely when discussing visual perception. (Or any skill development, for that matter.) When we are working with children to help them learn a difficult skill, it can be far too easy to get stuck on one detail of the issue and forget to take a step back to look at the bigger picture.

Autism Corner: Tips for Enjoying an Autism-Friendly Halloween
[Source:  ABA Learning Lab]

Halloween is upon us, and that means most kids (and some adults) are eagerly anticipating dressing up in their favorite costume and enjoying the spoils of trick-or-treating.  We grab our biggest pillowcases, our parents make sure our costumes are on straight, and we go from house to house with the simple proposition... give us candy, or run the risk of exposing yourself to trickery.

SLP Corner: 5 Tips for an Effective IEP Meeting
[Source:  Bilinguistics]

I had my first IEP meeting in the winter of 2003.  My teacher was running late, my administrator could not be found and the parent, an attorney, pulled out books to refute her child's ineligibility for speech services.  Since my inaugural meeting, I quickly learned what makes for an effective IEP meeting:
School Psych Corner: Childhood Anxiety in the News
Source:  Washington Post]

What does childhood anxiety look like? Probably not what you think.

A 7-year-old is the perfect student but destroys his bedroom and screams at his siblings after school. A 10-year-old snaps at her mother constantly, criticizing just about everything she does. An 8-year-old cries every morning before school and clings to his parents each time they attempt to drop him off at school, sports events or birthday parties. A 12-year-old experiences headaches that make it difficult to get out the door on time. A 6-year-old can't
