Where Do Our Judgements Come From?
 Trey Kennedy, Preaching Practicum

Why do they show up in our lives when they do?  How, as Unitarian Universalists, do we understand each other through them?  Join Trey for an exploration of how our judgements occur, what they reflect about us, and how to be attentive to ways in which we can change.
Trey Kennedy was born in the Bronx (NY), grew up on Long Island, but claims 32 years of living in and around New Orleans as some of the most significant and life-changing years, including 21 years of law enforcement  in patrol division, investigative division, and crime scene division doing evidence collection and reconstruction.

PARKING: Parking is available at The Community Church, as well as alternate parking options. Click here for a map.
Please note: parking is not allowed at the Kehillah across the street.

  • ART IN THE SANCTUARY Dennis Szerszen's photography exhibit, Unstill Waters, will be shown through August 27. A reception will be held on July 14 from 12:30-2:00 pm at The Community Church.
  • YES, THE POP-UP MART IS STILL GOING STRONG! Flowers of the hour, handcrafts, tempting produce, fresh eggs - you never know what there'll be. Have you some bounty to offer on the "Close-The-Gap" table during coffee hour this Sunday? Bring it on! Every dollar helps close the gap between estimated costs and projected capital funds for the church's building project!
  • HABITAT HOMES DEDICATION All Community Church members are invited and encouraged to join the celebration of a wonderful church-sponsored Habitat for Humanity project: the dedication of the eight Crescent Magnolia townhouses our church has been working on this year. The dedication will be Sat., July 13 at 10 a.m. at 131 Skip Rook Rd, Hillsborough. Seven new senior citizen townhouse owners will be there and our QUUilters group has made quilts to present to each of them. For more information on Crescent Magnolia, CLICK HERE.
  • WOMENCIRCLE CLOTHING EXCHANGE Bring some things, take some things! A fun, free and easy way to shop! Join us in the Jones Building on Saturday, July 13 from 9:00 - 12:00. In order to be ready for the shopping spree, bring your gently used clothes, scarves, jewelry, shoes, etc. to the church from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. p.m. on Friday, July 12. For questions, please email Helen Lancaster or call: 831-239-5370. By the way - WE NEED VOLUNTEERS! Helen is waiting for your call or email.
  • COMMUNITY CLICKERS Join us in the Straley Room for our monthly evening meeting on Monday, July 15th from 7-9 pm. We are taking a Summer break from designing shawls, so bring your latest projects and sit, click and chat. Can't knit or crochet? Come learn! Next afternoon meeting: Wednesday, August 7th from 2-4 pm, Commons Area. Contact us.
  • COME HELP FEED THE HUNGRY 7/16 WITH IFC Want to serve the food insecure in our community? It's simple! Sign up HERE. Sign up once or sign up every month to serve with The Inter-Faith Council for Social Services (IFC), of which The Community Church is a founding church. We need help preparing the meals and serving them - do one job or both! HELP IS ESPECIALLY NEEDED DURING THESE SUMMER MONTHS. Questions? Text (919)428-4440, or Email Maureen O'Rourke.
  • July 21 Share the Plate - School Supplies for Chatham and Orange Counties On July 21, the Share the Plate collection will go to fund backpacks and school supplies for K-12 students. Last year the Community Church generously funded about 180 backpacks. Our community contacts told me the need is great this year. Because we use bulk purchasing, a pack and supplies can be provided to a student for about $16.00. Let's get the students off to a good start this Fall. Questions? Email Teri Brooks or call or text 919-619-0107.
  • TRY-IT-OUT COVENANT GROUPS Curious about Covenant Groups? Come try one out on Sunday, July 28 from 3:00 to 4:30 in the Sanctuary. These small groups promote deep listening and connection by sharing around themed readings and focus questions. Try a summer drop-in group to see if you might like to join one of the year-long monthly ones, which re-form in the fall. Other Try-It-Out opportunities: August 25 & September 22. To sign up, contact Joanne Wood.
  • SECOND WEEK OF FIXING UP THE JONES BUILDING After the B&G demolition team cleared the way in week one, week two (July 1-6) brought in waves of energetic volunteer workers, supervised by B&G team members. (For photos, see the July issue of Building Blocks Bulletin.) They tackled cleaning and scraping and stripping painted cabinetry in two lower level classrooms. We learned the optimum shift size is 4 workers, at least until further notice. Almost all remaining shifts in July are full! See item below, "SIGN-UP IDEA OF THE WEEK."
  • SIGN-UP IDEA OF THE WEEK - "SCROLL" TO FIND A VACANT SLOT! Next time you gaze at the Fix-Up shift calendar (on display Sundays or on-line anytime), look for a future shift that doesn't yet have its full complement of 4 workers and add your name! You'll help move the project ahead in those two hours. For more information and a link to on-line signups, visit the Building Project home page.

  • REMINDER ABOUT WEEKDAY PARKING Thanks for participating in the life of our church! We love to see you here. If you come to church during the week, however, there are some parking guidelines we'd like you to heed. Please do not park in the big lot, as the church rents those spaces on weekdays from  6am to 7pm. The income from parking rentals is a significant part of our operating budget, and we want to treat these renters equitably. Folks are welcome to park in the lot near the office, or in the "pine lot" at the top of the driveway, or in the small lot in the back (with its own driveway). Questions? Please contact Rachel Rose, when she's wearing her office assistant hat.

  • Art in the Sanctuary Dennis Szerszen's photography exhibit, Unstill Waters, will be shown through August 27. Predominantly abstract images of water, his photographs are intended as contemplative studies. Dennis states that he is "pulled to water: its power, resilience, movement, and interaction with its surroundings...I am never alone when I am near it." Dennis Szerszen retired from a career as a software company executive to engage in his passion-- photography-- and to see how he could leverage that interest in the community. Dennis volunteers as a photography mentor with the Karen Youth Art Group, which is sponsored by the Frank Gallery. He also teaches various photography- related topics through Duke University's OLLI program. Dennis is a staff photographer for local community magazines. He exhibits as a proud member of the Triangle Visual Artists guild. A reception will be held on July 14 from 12:30-2:00 pm.
  • Help make Sunday mornings happen - Become a Greeter! Our church is busier than ever, and we need folks to help welcome people in to our church on Sunday morning and we have many Greeter spaces open over the next few weeks! Please take a moment to sign up to be a Greeter, and help new people see what our community is really like.  Please join us when you can for this simple, but important work.  Thanks so much - your help is appreciated!
  • WELCOMING CHILDREN IN THE SANCTUARY Children are a wonderful gift to this community. Children are always welcome to worship in the Sanctuary. To support little ones during the service, we will now offer Busy Bags (pouches with fun activities) and Busy Boards (coloring and writing activities) as well as soft toys for our youngest worshipers. Stop by the new Children's Welcome Table in the Sanctuary (across from the Art Table near the Sound Room).
  • LECTIO (SACRED READING) MEDITATION GROUP meets at noon every Friday in the Commons.  We use readings from poetry and the wisdom traditions of the world's religions as prompts for reflection and sharing.  No need to sign up ahead of time.  Please join us.
