Our Knights opened the month of September with momentum and as the calendar below illustrates, we now have a number of important events and student activities getting underway this week and next. Please make especially sure to mark the two dates we have set for our annual Open House: September 18th (6th grade) and September 20th (7th & 8th grades). The students and teachers are greatly looking forward to showcasing their work, classrooms, and the campus.

In this week's issue we have expanded our sports section. I want to thank our community members for turning out for the soccer games and supporting our Knights. More than ever at home games, it means so much to our student-athletes and the coaches to see a solid showing on the home side of the field!

Thank you for looking over this update and kindly take note of our PTSA and SAC meetings this week (below). All members of our school community are invited to attend and encouraged to participate.

Make it a great week!

In Knights Honor,

Stephanie R. Jackson, M. Ed.
Principal, Lake Nona Middle School

Media Minutes

Heavy Student Activity During Month #1
The media center has been open for business since the second week of school and business is BOOMING! To say it has been the busiest opening since I have been there is an understatement. Every morning it is PACKED in our space and I LOVE IT! It's wonderful to see so many students checking out books and taking advantage of all we have to offer.

SSYRA
The SSYRA Reward Card Program is in full effect as well. Students can earn a reward card when they read three (3) of the SSYRA (Sunshine State Young Readers Award) books and pass the multiple choice tests on the books. We already have 26 students who have earned their cards (listed below)! For it being just the first month of school, that is AMAZING!

* SSYRA = Sunshine State Young Readers Award Program

The brag board above shows the number of the SSYRA books read by our Knights as of last week. There are a total of 15 SSYRA books for 2018-2019 - List of SSYRA books

Students are able to add their name to our brag board outside the media center (above) once they earn their card. I cannot wait to see this board at the end of the year! Congratulations to the following students who are rocking their reading:

Scholastic Book Fair
To add to all the bustling activity, we are getting ready to welcome the Scholastic Book Fair to the LNMS Media Center. The book fair will be here beginning Friday, September 14th. Students will be visiting through their language arts classes and will be able to come back and shop before school, at lunch, and after school. A link will be on the school website beginning September 9th for parents to check out the Scholastic website for our fair.

You may shop online where there are many more options and a great newer feature to take advantage of is the E-Wallet, You can add funds electronically to an e-wallet for students to shop at the fair - no need to send cash or a card to school with them! Stay tuned for more information coming your way! We will also be open during both Open Houses on the 18th (6th grade) and the 20th (7th and 8th grades). All purchases benefit the LNMS Media Center!

Knight Sports

This past week our soccer teams hosted their first two home games in the Kingdom. Wednesday evening our boys team had a nail-biter game against a very tough Hunter's Creek team. After an intense first half with a score of 0-0, we knew were going to have a challenging game ahead of us. The Eagles scored the first goal of the game at the start of the second half. However, our Knights did not give up and continued to fight. After a great defensive stop by our Knights defense, eighth grader Charles Gilmore (CJ) broke away and made a tremendous pass to Asael Sterwart who converted for our game tying goal. At the end of two halves and a five-minute overtime, we remained tied at 1-1. On to penalty shots we go! Making penalty shots for our Knights were J ackson Shiver, Javier Ortega, Elian Watley, and Adrien Danley. Goalie Sebastian Maldonado held Hunter's Creek to only two penalty shots, earning our Knights another victory. Our boys also won again Thursday against Meadow Woods. The final score was 3-0.

Wednesday night our lady Knights also had a tough game against a very competitive Hunter's Creek girls team. After a scoreless first half by both teams, the Eagles scored the first goal to take the lead at 1-0. The Lady Knights came close to scoring a few times, but unfortunately ended up short suffering their first loss of the season.

On Thursday our ladies bounced back and played a spectacular game against Meadow Woods. Isabella Bonilla scored the first goal for our Lady Knights. Luanna German made the second goal with the assist from Bonilla.

This week our Knights play two home games. Monday afternoon we face Cornerstone at 5:30pm and Wednesday afternoon versus Walker Middle School at 5:00pm. Please come out and support your Knights!

Hero Program

Lake Nona Middle School is a HERO school!

HERO encourages positive student behavior choices, but tracks all behaviors. When students demonstrate HERO behaviors, they may earn points toward exciting incentives. We invite students and parents to register your own HERO account so we may keep the lines of communication between home and school open.  Once you register online, you may download the HERO app to receive push notifications about your student's HERO behavior throughout the day.  Students and guardians will each have a unique Hero login account.
