This Week at Chapel of Our Saviour
October 21, 2018 - Twenty Second Sunday After Pentecost

God's People of Abundance
It’s that time of year when we turn to focus more intentionally on cultivating gratitude to God for all that we have been given.
For the past couple of Sundays, we've been invited by our stewardship team to sign up for dinners that will be happening in October and November. There have already been a number of these stewardship dinners where we've been invited in small gatherings to share about how giving to God nourishes our faith and life.
I've been part of a number of these conversations already this fall and one thing is abundantly clear to me: One of the most powerful and obvious gifts of this particular community is that we have been blessed with a genuine and deep sense of hospitality that new folks pick up on right away.
This has also been clear:
We are a people of abundance and we delight in sharing it.
As we enter into this season of thanksgiving for all that we have been given,
I want you invite you thoughtfully and prayerfully consider the many blessings that God has given you. Think about this church and what it means to you.
Consider this very important question:
What portion of my income is God calling me to give
to support the ministry of Chapel of Our Saviour?
Pledge forms for our 2019 stewardship season will be available this Sunday.
They are not the usual boring blank stewardship forms. To invite every one of us to make a pledge to the church,
your stewardship team has handwritten the names of each of us on the pledge forms! If you haven't already, you can pick up yours after any of our three Sunday services.
Oh - and if you've never made a pledge to the church before, there is a member of our congregation who has come forward with a special invitation to encourage your first pledge to the mission and ministry of this church.
Any new pledges from first-time pledgers
will be matched by this member of our community.
Wow.
With this gift, we have the opportunity to significantly increase the number of new pledges this year and further expand the reach of our ministries.
We have so much to celebrate as this community stretches, grows and continues to live into God’s open ended future with us. As we enter into this season of stewardship, I hope that you will join me in giving thanks to God for all that has been and all that is to come in this vibrant community of faith.
See you Sunday!
David

Fall Community Dinners
The Fall Stewardship Campaign will be kicked off with a series of fun dinners. Every member of the congregation will be invited to one of the dinners, to be held in the homes of the Stewardship Committee, the Vestry, the Finance Committee.
All the dinners will be held in October, to coincide with the Stewardship Campaign, and to be completed by November 7, the Celebration Day to end the campaign.
Invitations will come along at random intervals as we complete dinners and as we make sure that everyone can attend. Be assured that you will have a place at the table.
If you have not done so already, sign up to attend a dinner

From your Vestry
The last three editions of this email sending have introduced Mary Bach, who recently joined Chapel of Our Saviour to help with our growing children’s programs. Mary is a committed, energetic addition to the planning and supervision of our youth programs, and we hope you get the chance to welcome her aboard. She can usually be found at fellowship after the 10:45 service – she is the one surrounded by several adoring little ones. Our thanks to the couple of parishioners who have added to their pledged giving to support this initiative.
There has been a buzz this year at our Vestry meetings over the growth in the number of youth participating in our Chapel programs. This growth may not be visible to all, particularly those who attend primarily at the earlier services—so this seems an opportune time to describe a typical week’s activity. Last Sunday saw 10 children in our child care during the 10:45 service and another 11 participating in Children’s Chapel, all pre-school or elementary school aged. Sunday afternoon at 4 pm, as on most every Sunday afternoon, another twenty young people in grades 6 through 12 took over the parish house for a couple of hours. That’s about 40 of our youth participating in our youth programs on a given Sunday. Pretty good reason for a buzz—this is a notable increase over recent years.
Last Sunday’s Gazette included an article discussing a recent Harvard study that showed that children raised in a religious environment that includes church attendance are much better protected against depression, substance abuse, and other risky behaviors. Our thanks to Krista, Mary, and all our involved parishioners for making our youth programs so welcoming to our young people.

Parents of Young & Young-ish Children
Being a parent is one of the most profound practices of love we may experience. It is also one of the most challenging experiences life may bring. The support of a church community full of other parents helps us grow as individuals and provides support in this holy life work. This small group will be a time to reflect with other parents and grow in prayerful community.

Almighty God, giver of every good gift: Look graciously on your Church, and so guide the minds of those who shall choose a bishop for this Diocese, and those in discernment with us,that we may receive a faithful pastor, who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries; through Jesus Christ our Lord. ANNOUNCEMENTS
8@6 Dinners
What’s 8@6? It is an evening of fellowship with others from Chapel of Our Saviour. It is an opportunity to enjoy a pot luck dinner with about 8 participants at 6 pm on a Saturday evening in a home. Those who enjoyed these dinners last year asked if we could plan four dinner this year, so here are the dates:
November 3, January 12, March 2, and May 4.
We need a few hosts for each evening, who will plan the dinner and provide the main course. They will get in touch with those who will join them. Others will bring an appetizer, salad, or dessert. While the food is always delicious, the fellowship is even more delightful. These dinners are a wonderful way to get to know other parishioners in a social setting. We especially encourage those who are new to Chapel to join us for the opportunity to meet others.
There is a sign-up sheet for the November 3 dinner in the narthex of the church. Those who sigh up can expect a call the Sunday or Monday before the dinner. Please come and join us!
Questions? Please call Linda Rowe 459-8698.

B Street Food Pantry –
Healthy Snacks for Young Children (raisins, Z bars, canned fruit, fruit snacks)
Healthy snacks are
particularly important for younger children in need. Because of their smaller size, they cannot eat all of the recommended nutrients during regular meals. Therefore, preschool age children need frequent small meals, usually five or six per day. Healthy snacks provide fiber, fruits, proteins and vegetables. Individually packaged raisins, applesauce, granola bars, nuts, fruit rollups, and whole grain crackers are examples of healthy snacks. If each family brings a healthy snack this month, we will help many young children. On Sunday, please put your donation in the basket by the baptismal font. Otherwise, the little red wagon will be just inside the main door of the Parish House and donations may always be dropped off there.

Thanksgiving Food Basket Collection
Every November, Westside CARES, member faith communities, and Boy Scout Troop 187 put together 80 Thanksgiving baskets to give to our neighbors in need. Westside CARES gives vouchers to west side elementary schools, who determine the recipients. Each basket contains the food items necessary to make a traditional holiday meal for a family. This year, from Oct 15 to Nov 15, we are collecting 180 cans of green beans and five turkeys or hams.
