Students, Faculty Serve as Buddies
with Carolina Miracle League
Sherman students and employees continue their strong involvement with Carolina Miracle League this fall. The college sponsors a team and has quite a few students and faculty serving as buddies in the league, which embraces the belief that “every child deserves a chance to play baseball.”

New Interns Complete
Clinic Challenge Experience
Two quarters of new interns completed the Clinic Challenge Experience (CCX) on October 9. CCX is designed to help students make a successful transition from classroom to chiropractic internship by sharpening their professional focus, energizing their passion for chiropractic and exposing them to success principles for practice.

15th Annual IRAPS Held
Sherman College of Chiropractic hosted its 15th Annual International Research and Philosophy Symposium (IRAPS), a peer-reviewed conference on vertebral subluxation research and the philosophy of chiropractic, in Spartanburg, SC, October 6-7, 2018.
This year’s conference provided a platform for a wide variety of topics, according to Vice President for Academic Affairs Joe Donofrio, D.C., ’94. “We had a record number of abstracts submitted this year,” he noted. “I have been attending IRAPS since it began, and the quality and relevance of the presentations to a vertebral subluxation correction practice was remarkable. I am very excited to see how this year’s ideas and discussions produce even more thoughtful presentations next year.”

Spartanburg, Adjusted:
Spinal Symposium a Success
Sherman College recently hosted its inaugural “Spartanburg, Adjusted” Spinal Health Symposium with a focus on the human-animal bond. Events included an afternoon drop-in at the Spartanburg Methodist College Studio in downtown Spartanburg and a sold-out dinner program at the exclusive Piedmont Club. Both events featured guest speakers who are acclaimed doctors in the field: certified animal chiropractor Jay Komarek, D.C., of Boulder, CO, and American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (AVCA) certified veterinarians Amy Hayek, D.V.M., and Bill Ormston, D.V.M., of Dallas, TX.
Komarek extended his stay and his generosity by hosting an “Introduction to Equine Chiropractic Care” hands-on adjusting seminar on September 21 at HALTER, a therapeutic horseback riding program that serves children with disabilities. Komarek donated all proceeds from the program to Sherman College.

Pioneer Graduate Brannon Retires
Sherman College’s first female graduate, Virginia Brannon, D.C., ’76, was honored during a surprise retirement party on October 13 at her office in Boiling Springs, SC.
Her family and many of her chiropractic patients through the years attended, and Director of Teaching and Learning Billie Harrington, Ph.D., and Assistant Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Public Relations Ohmar T. Land, D.M., joined the celebration on behalf of Sherman College.
Brannon was a member of the college’s “pioneer” class – its first class – graduating in September 1976. She was the first female to receive the Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Sherman College. Brannon has been in private practice ever since, serving patients in the local area.

ACP Europe Nears Completion
Sherman College’s 2018-2019 European contingent of the Academy of Chiropractic Philosophers (ACP) gathered in Treviso, Italy, in September for its most recent module exploring scholarly chiropractic philosophy.
The ACP
is a one-year course designed to enhance the understanding, depth and breadth of chiropractic philosophy. The Academy is committed to helping members become the writers, thinkers and speakers that the profession needs. Candidates complete a scholarly 100-hour program exploring classical to modern-day philosophy.
Previous European sessions were held in Paris and Barcelona; the next session will be held in Braunschweig, Germany, in November, and the final session is scheduled for February 2019 in London.

Showcase Sherman Weekend is an event for prospective students to explore chiropractic and Sherman College and is designed to ignite students’ passion for leadership as well as help them begin their pursuit of becoming the next generation of DCs2B. Check out the

Sherman College will be hosting the next Showcase Sherman Weekend at the AC Hotel in downtown Spartanburg on November 2-3. Due to construction on campus, prospective students and their guests are invited to stay at the new hotel to further enjoy and explore Spartanburg each day after sessions end; November guests will be treated to a Spartanburg history trolley ride. Attendees have an opportunity to visit the Sherman College campus for a tour and palpation session.

Interns Join Chiropractic
Health Center
Twenty-four interns are now ready to serve the community and see patients at the Chiropractic Health Center. Interns celebrated the entrance of this final phase of their chiropractic education recently during a pinning ceremony.
“Students transitioning into their clinical internship at the Health Center are well prepared to deliver quality and effective care to our friends and neighbors in the greater Spartanburg area,” said Dean of Clinic Operations and Outreach Kristy Shepherd, M.A. “These students are the future of the chiropractic profession.”

Student Ambassadors Meet
for Quarterly Training, Awards
Students in the Sherman College
Ambassador program
had their quarterly dinner after returning to classes on October 8.
This event was an opportunity for the Ambassadors to work with Escape Artist Greenville in a team-building activity that focused on realizing individual strengths and working as a team to overcome obstacles and challenges.
Quarterly awards were also presented during this meeting. Pictured from left to right, Angelica Lopez, Charles Tucker, and Nicole Mercado shared the Officer of the Quarter Award, Christian Ortiz was presented with the Ambassador of the Quarter Award, and Craig Bryan was presented with the Showcase Sherman Weekend MVP Award.
All honorees received a gift card for their hard work during the quarter.

Favorite thing about the Upstate Region:
Numerous places to hike and sight-see, great food and brew, great weather, only a couple hours from the beach, and it’s close to Charlotte, Asheville and Greenville.

Mike Williams, a fourteenth quarter student from Abingdon, VA. Mike graduates in December 2018 and plans to take over an office in Richlands, VA, and assist in an additional office in Abingdon, VA. Both offices are owned by Regent Chris Brown, D.C.
