Pete's Powerful Points
THE NEED TO KNOW BEFORE SURGERY
"Removal of the lumbar disks or pieces of them has become a common surgical procedure. If you are considering it, first ask the doctor 4 questions:
- Why is the disk herniated?
- Don't I need the portion of the disk you'll remove?
- Will I be able to resume all of my previous physical activities?
- Will the problem recur with another disk?
Be skeptical if you're told, in answer to the first question, that the damage to the disk is related to your age or an accident. As for the second, your back was designed to use each disk--all of each disk. The question about physical activity is important because treatment that purports to cure should restore your health and functions, not curtail them. Finally, a recurrence is likely after surgery because the musculoskeletal problems that caused the first herniation will still be at work."
