Message From the President
I hope everyone is enjoying the summer as well as taking some time off to spend with family and friends. Our membership is continuing to grow as the Board of Directors continues to work hard to expand what services and resources we can provide to our members. The Board is exploring many options, among those updating the AES website and how to best utilize Connect, forming partnerships so we can offer training to our affiliate members, and identifying organizations we can collaborate with to promote the ergonomics profession.
Additionally, the Applied Ergonomics Conference Committee is hard at work planning the 2019 conference. There is a lot going on with abstracts due, scheduling conference sponsored webinars, etc. Mark your calendar with the conference details and the webinar schedules

As we continue to build AES, suggestions and recommendations are always welcome. Please consider getting involved by volunteering to help build the Society by contacting any of the officers or Board of Directors. Profile: Winning Ergo Cup® Excellence Award for Ergonomics Risk Reduction - Honda of America, Anna Engine Plant
A team from Honda of America Manufacturing's Engine Plant in Anna, Ohio won
the Ergo Cup Excellence Award for ergonomics risk reduction at the 2018 Applied Ergonomics Conference.
Their entry, "The Clampetts", focused on a job requiring employees to set clamps on hoses, prior to those hoses being installed onto engines. It was estimated that more than six million clamps are set per year in this facility alone.
Employees initially used needle nosed pliers to squeeze clamp tabs, with forces
ranging from 7-25 lbs., often using awkward hand/wrist postures. Data from comfort surveys confirmed that morale was being impacted by this job. In addition to these ergonomics concerns, the time to manually set these clamps ranged from 10-30 seconds, and clamp positions on hoses were inconsistent, which resulted in additional repair or readjustment time.
To solve this problem, the team developed a cylinder system, placed on a work
table, which squeezed each clamp. This allowed them to be attached to hoses with no manual gripping, eliminating the job's force requirements and reducing the number of hand/wrist movements required. Employees feedback was positive. In addition, this improvement eliminated non-value-added time due to clamp readjustment. This system also eliminated clamp scratches, which lead to pre-mature rusting.
The cost to fabricate this clamping system was recouped in less than one month, due to improved quality, increased productivity, and injury avoidance. As a result of this success, Honda has since installed similar clamping systems throughout this plant and shared this solution with other Honda engine and powertrain assembly plants. They also believe that any production facility that installs clamps on rubber hoses can use this solution as well.

Free Ergo Assessment App for Lifting
Have you heard about the new mobile app, which is based on the popular NIOSH Lifting Equation? The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed this tool, NLE Calc, to calculate its Lifting Index for both single and multiple manual lifting tasks (the Composite Lifting Index). This app is a means to provide estimates of low back injury risk to help in the design and evaluation of lifting tasks for reducing employee injuries.

- The Ergonomic Professional's Role Under ADA Title I - Thursday, August 2nd, 2018 - 2:00 PM EST
Ergonomic evaluation specialists are ideally situated to add immediate value to the services they offer, by combining ergonomic evaluation skills with solid knowledge of the requirements of Title I (Employment) of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the demands of Section 503 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act. Seeking to remain in compliance with these federal statutes, public, private, and government employers need defendable answers to questions about the physical demands and inherent risks of job tasks.
This webinar will discuss work measurement techniques supported by recent federal court cases, your role in managing the reasonable accommodation process, the support you can give in direct threat situations, and the drafting of acceptable essential function task statements.
This webinar will be led by Roy Matheson, Managing Partner of Reasonable Accommodation LLC. His unique career path of 25 years in occupation rehabilitation, with an emphasis in employment testing and job analysis, now includes certification as an Americans with Disabilities Act Coordinator (ADAC). His current ADA Title I and Rehab Act Section 503 practice focuses on private employer, municipal, and state entity training and reasonable accommodation program development. Roy is the author of an active blog and manager of the Reasonable Accommodation Start-Up Lab.

Dr. Andrew Imada will cover the following topics:

The presentation will last about thirty minutes, and there will be time for questions. The Executive Director of the Board of Certification in Professional Ergonomics (BCPE), Carol Stuart-Buttle will also be on hand to answer questions about the certification application process.
Dr. Andrew Imada is President of AS Imada and Associates. He is a specialist in human and organizational change, and his work focuses on helping people and organizations change to improve productivity, safety, quality, and work systems. Dr. Imada was a professor of Ergonomics and Safety Sciences at the University of Southern California for 19 years. He also served as the director of the USC Safety Science Center and the International Distance Learning Liaison at the university's Center for Scholarly Technology. Dr. Imada is also a Certified Professional Ergonomist.
