AAUW Book Group
Meets the second Monday of the month at 10:30 am
at City Island Library
December 9—
“The Library Book”
by Susan Orlean. On the morning of April 29, 1986, a fire alarm sounded in the L.A. Public Library. As the moments passed, the patrons and staff who had been cleared out of the building realized this was not the usual fire alarm. The fire was disastrous: it reached 2000 degrees and burned for more than seven hours. Mary Sines will lead the discussion.
J
anuary 13—
“There There”
Is the first novel by Cheyenne and Arapaho author Tommy Orange. The book explores the themes of Native peoples living in urban spaces, and issues of ambivalence and complexity related to Native’ struggles with identity and authenticity. Elviria LaBarre will lead the discussion.
All members are invited to participate!

Congratulations to the 2019
Woman in Transition Scholarship!
Shannon O'Regan
Shannon is a photography student who is doing a project that she foresee's turning into something even bigger then an assignment. The working title of the portrait project is "Substantive Beauty". It is centrally focused to showcase and celebrate women over 40-years-old who have / or are overcoming various circumstances, barriers or obstacles in their lives in order to enhance, grow, or change their life for the better. This is her description of the project:
Through this project I hope to contribute and accomplish three key things:
- Honor and celebrate the maturing woman for all she has to offer the world - especially those in under-served communities.
- Provide a visual voice that the maturing woman is substantive - body, mind & spirit. She is significant, has value, and her beauty shines from the inside out.
- Champion my fellow females by help elevate their self-esteem, self-worth and confidence as they pursue their endeavors via a beautiful photograph of themselves. It is my artistic and creative way of giving back and paying-it-forward to those that have and continue to help me achieve my goals.

AAUW Florida Tech Trek
What is a Tech Trek Camp?
From building model bridges, designing computer applications, programming robotic cars, being a marine biologist for a day and exploring wind power, what do these girls have in common? They all are experiencing science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)! at one of two week-long STEM residential experience for girls going into the 8th grade. In 2020, there will be two Tech Trek camps in Florida. One will be at Stetson University; the second will be at Florida Atlantic University in Jupiter from June. Each will have an enrollment of 48 girls. Girls are nominated to attend by science and math teachers. The girls will then complete an application that includes answering questions and writing an essay. Later they will have a personal interview. If you wish to be on the interview committee for local applicants, please contact Mary Ann Sines.
How to Support Tech Trek
The financial support of corporate sponsors, AAUW branches and generous individuals are needed each year to make a girl’s dream dream of attending a Tech Trek camp a reality! The only cost to the girls selected to attend a camp is a $50 registration fee. Camp would not be possible without volunteers to assist teachers, serve as camp staff, assist with hands-on workshops, field trips, special events, and reach out to Florida communities to enlist the help of corporations and female STEM role models. Tech Trek Florida is a project of the AAUW Florida Supporting Foundation, Inc. Please make checks payable to the
AAUW Florida Supporting Foundation, Inc
. with Tech Trek noted in the memo line. Mail to
Tech Trek, AAUW Florida Supporting Foundation, PO Box 2938, Jupiter, FL 33468.
Contributions to the camps are income tax-deductible. If you are interested in volunteering or making an in-kind contribution please contact the Tech Trek Camp Coordinator, at
