Alliance encouraged as restaurants can operate at 50% capacity starting Friday
"This is the beginning of our economic recovery"
After weeks of advocacy, Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance leaders are encouraged to see COVID restrictions on businesses loosening.
Starting Friday, March 5, restaurants and bars are allowed to be at 50% capacity up to 100 people with an 11 p.m. curfew. The Alliance represents 16 chambers and economic development organizations and over 7,000 member businesses from across northern Michigan.

The organization commended Governor Gretchen Whitmer for listening to businesses, including those in the hospitality industry. “Alliance member organizations are certainly feeling encouraged by Tuesday's announcement,” said Stacie Bytwork, the chairperson of the Alliance and president and CEO of the Manistee Area Chamber of Commerce. “The easing of restrictions, including increasing capacity for restaurants and bars, is a start down the path of economic recovery for our regional business community.”
The Alliance called for a sustained reopening process in order to promote the survival of regional businesses. The organization said all businesses should have the ability to reasonably operate with proper safety protocols in place, including wedding and banquet venues. The organization said it stands ready to support reopening discussions and will continue working with its member organizations and their member businesses on implementing the new order.

“The Alliance is committed to remaining a good partner to the state and their efforts by supporting our businesses in following the new order,” said Sarah Hagen, vice-chairperson of the Alliance and president of the Charlevoix Area Chamber of Commerce.

Today's the deadline to order our new puzzles

Today, Thursday, is the last day pre-order the new Harbor Springs puzzles. The puzzles cost $30 and will be delivered in late April. Our second limited-edition 504-piece summer is a beautiful summer scene of downtown Harbor Springs.

After today, a limited number of puzzles will only be available at the chamber office and a few local retailers. The Chamber’s first puzzle last winter proved extremely popular and sold out quickly. We will continue offering two new puzzles per year - summer and winter.

When they arrive, we will email you to pick up your puzzles from the chamber office. Optional shipping is also available for a fee.

QUESTIONS? Email director@harborspringschamber.com or call 231-526-7999.

THANK YOU to Dr. Edwin Cohen for the beautiful puzzle photo!
Chamber searching for new office space

The Harbor Springs Chamber has started to search for new office space, and we’re open to suggestions and ideas from our members and the community. By the end of this year, the chamber will have to move from its current office, which it has shared with the Andrew Blackbird Museum at 368 Main Street, for the past 20 years or so.

In January, 2020, the City Council approved a final two-year lease for the chamber as part of a plan to have the chamber move out and to have the city transfer museum management to the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society. The city and the historical society have not finalized an agreement to make that happen, but discussions are ongoing.

The chamber needs an office with space for two staff members, a copy machine, file cabinets and displays of local information and materials. The chamber is open to options that would include sharing office space. If we find a space that is somewhat larger than we need, we are open to partnering with another small office or business that also needs space. Ideally, we would like to be in or close to the downtown, but we are flexible on that option as well.

Anyone with space available between now and the end of the year is invited to contact Bonnie Kulp, Chamber Executive Director, at 231-526-7999 or director@harborspringschamber.com

College lecture examines U.S. immigration realities
North Central Michigan College will host an international lecture on the realities of the U.S. immigration system. Rev. Wayne Dziekan will use his field experience as an immigration advocate and his work on Catholic social doctrine to share insight on common questions related to this complex subject. The free lecture will be held via Zoom at 12 p.m. on March 16. Pregistration is required.

“Why don’t the estimated 11 million people in the U.S. without legal status bother to get papers? What are some real solutions to unauthorized immigration? These are some of the most misunderstood questions concerning the topic of immigration in the U.S.,” Dziekan said.

Ordained since 1994, Dziekan is a Roman Catholic priest with the Diocese of Gaylord and a member of the Hispanic Ministry of the Diocese in Traverse City. He has been an immigration advocate for most of his ordained life, becoming passionate about the immigration dynamics he was witnessing in Northern Michigan and nationwide.

Odawa Casino presents nearly $8,000 to nonprofits

Odawa Casino raised $7,992.97 in donations to share equally among three local nonprofits, and presented checks to the organizations including Manna Food Project, Brother Dan’s Food Pantry, and the Charlevoix Community Food Pantry, for $2,664.32 each.

Odawa Casino launched the Spare Change Donation program in August 2020 in response to the national coin shortage, which simultaneously supports local nonprofits within the community. The program includes boxes around the casino floor where guests are able to donate the change from their gaming vouchers instead of cashing them in at the casino cashier.

“We are pleased to see that the community has had such a positive response to the program. This is another way for all of us to continue to give back and we plan to continue with it moving forward in order to help as many organizations as possible” said Ron Olson, Odawa Casino General Manager.

If an organization would like to be considered as one of the recipients in future months, they are encouraged to contact Community Development Coordinator Marty Van De Car at mvandecar@odawacasino.com.
Ram signs support the girls basketball program

The Harbor Springs girls basketball team is conducting a fundraiser, selling street address and door/window Ram signs. These high-quality signs are made of durable aluminum and they are reflective, just like street signs. Whether it’s a pizza delivery or visitors, no one will have trouble finding your house – day or night.

Girls basketball Coach Mike Vandermus said, “They come with holes for either mounting to the side of your mailbox post or on a wall or door. This fundraiser not only will help pay for important equipment and camps for our girls basketball team but will also be a great way to show school pride throughout our community without being too gaudy or too subtle. Please take a moment to check out the options and create your own sign on the website.

Orchestras across the world had planned to celebrate the 250th birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven in 2020 before COVID-19 struck. Although he is often hailed as a hero who overcame deafness to compose some of the greatest music ever written, there is much more to his story. Amanda Sewell, Ph.D., music director for Interlochen Public Radio, will survey his life and music, focusing on some less well-known facets, including his long affair with a married woman known as “Immortal Beloved.” Sewell has written a biography of Wendy Carlos, the composer of “Switched-on Bach” published by Oxford University Press.
