ANNOUNCEMENTS
Business of the Year Recognition Program
College Park’s growing and vibrant business community is full of unsung heroes who provide well-paying jobs for our residents, develop creative solutions to everyday problems, and take care of the community that they call home.

To show our appreciation for these outstanding businesses and their positive impacts on our community, the City has recently developed a Business of the Year recognition program. The program is designed to highlight the contributions of one particularly outstanding business each year.

Residents and business owners are encouraged to nominate their favorite businesses for the reward. The winning business will be announced in October and will receive a plaque to place in their establishment.

Nominations are accepted via the online web form on our website now through August 31, 2019. For details or to nominate a business, visit www.collegeparkmd.gov/econdev .

A WEEK IN REVIEW
Office of the City Manager
City Manager Somers, Assistant City Manager Gardiner, and City Attorney Ferguson participated in a conference call with HR&A, the City’s development consultant, concerning negotiations with the University about how costs associated with development of the City Hall block will fairly allocated. In general, it appears that City and University staff are in agreement in principle. Drafting of a development agreement is underway and is tentatively scheduled for City Council discussion in September.

City Engineer Halpern and City Manager Somers met with Mr. Jenkins (property owner) concerning an agreement on how finalize trolley trail improvements in the Berwyn neighborhood and simultaneously increase parking opportunities for customers of local businesses.

City Manager Somers, HR Director Clements, Public Services Director Ryan, and UMPD Deputy Chief Lloyd participated in a walk through of the temporary City Hall space (8400 Baltimore Avenue) to identify safety improvements. Improvements will be implemented prior to the temporary relocation of City Hall.
Department of Public Works
Please join the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) for a Mosquito Workshop on Monday, July 15 at 6pm at Davis Hall (9217 51st Avenue). MDA can answer your questions about mosquitoes and explain their program; details are below under Events.

From July 1-8, 760 lbs of food scraps were diverted from the landfill (the most weight in a one-week period). If you want a food scrap bucket to start diverting your food scraps, please stop by the Department during business hours. Visit www.collegeparkmd.gov/foodscraps for more information about the program and how to get started.

MDA Mosquito Control Program
  • The City cooperates with the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) to identify and control mosquito populations. The program consists of:
  • Larviciding standing water; treatments are made by MDA personnel to known areas of standing water to control mosquito larva preventing their development into adult mosquitoes. MDA does this every 4-6 weeks.
  • Spraying to control adult mosquitoes has begun and goes through early September. Spraying for adult mosquitoes may occur in College Park (weather permitting) after dusk on Wednesday evenings by truck mounted ultra-low volume sprayers. MDA does not spray individual properties; they treat neighborhoods that meet certain thresholds.
  • Prince George’s County Health Department reminds residents to follow the three D’s to keep mosquitoes away:
  • Drain: Standing water attracts mosquitoes. Empty out any outside water containers near your home at least once per week
  • Dress: Dark clothing attracts mosquitoes. Wear long sleeves, long pants, and light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Defend: Properly apply an EPA-registered repellent such as DEET, picaridin, IR 3535, or oil of lemon-eucalyptus. For permanent areas of standing water (ponds, rain barrels, etc), contact the City's Department of Public Works for a mosquito torpedo which releases an insect growth regulator in water that prevents adult mosquito development.
  • To report areas of heavy mosquito populations, go to the following link and provide your information http://www.doit.state.md.us/selectsurvey/TakeSurvey.aspx?SurveyID=740Kl54#
  • Request for Exemption from Adult Mosquito Control Services:
  • Any resident who wishes to have his/her property excluded from adult mosquito control pesticide applications by truck-mounted ultra-low volume (ULV) sprayers must fill out this form annually. Click here for application.
  • For more information, please visit www.collegeparkmd.gov/pets#mosquitoes.
