IIAN Board Updates Strategic Direction For 2020
Annual Planning Retreat June 20-21 - Focus On InsurTech, Member Needs
Every summer IIAN's Board of Directors meets to focus on strategic priorities and plan for the future. This year's meeting was held at the Prairie Creek Inn east of Lincoln, chaired by  IIAN President Sandra Ryks .  Board members and staff met over two days - June 20-21 - and brainstormed strategies to help member agencies succeed and stay relevant, by continuing to
  • vet and recommend digital business solutions through IIAN's Digital Toolkit and conferences, and
  • talk to members in person about their business and professional development needs, and promote opportunities for members to engage in association programs, and take advantage of Big "I" member benefits and services.

IIAN will also continue to focus on two important recently initiated programs:  nextgen, a statewide program to help young agents grow and succeed, and the Talent Network program to promote career opportunities in the independent agency system to Nebraska college students and job-seekers, in partnership with the IIAN Foundation.
IIAN Foundation Board members joined the retreat to develop an action plan for the Talent Network for 2019-20, led by Foundation President Dee Sykora.

Trump Administration Releases New HRA Rules
Earlier this month, the Trump Administration released its final rule on expanding health reimbursement arrangements (HRAs).  Starting in January, 2020, the final rule would make it easier for employers to use HRAs to help their employees purchase health plans.
The Big "I" had previously submitted comments to the Administration to make clear that the Big "I" supports health insurance choice and competition, and noting that any final rule must maintain an appropriate role for independent insurance agencies.

House Committee Passes Five-
Year NFIP Renewal
In a moment of bipartisanship, on June 12 the U.S. House Financial Services Committee passed the legislation by a unanimous vote of 59-0.
The legislation provides certainty to the NFIP by reauthorizing it for five years.  It also includes language clarifying that private floood insurance can satisfy the NFIP's continuous coverage requirements.  This continuous coverage fix has been a top Big "I" priority, along with language providing refunds of unearned premiums for mid-terms cancellations of NFIP policies in favor of private policies.
Earlier this month, the House passed a disaster aid package that included an extension of the NFIP program through September 30, 2019.

TECHNOLOGY
The world of InsurTech is noisy.  The goal of the IIAN Digital initiative is to get rid of the noise.  We are creating the Digital Toolkit so you can pick the vendors you want to work with and get back to running your agency.
IIAN's Digital Task Force is dedicated to helping you select the right digital tools. We review everything from the latest CRM tools to website developers and lead generation companies.   The Vendors we select to include in our toolkit are vetted by our Digital Task Force - made up of members like you. Once the selections are made, IIAN hosts a live demo via webinar. You have the option to join us live or watch the recording at your convenience. Click here to see our first five Vendor webinars. - Advisor Evolved, Indio, Big I Hires, Total CSR, and Rocket Referrals.
The toolkit is new for 2019 so we will be adding more vendors all year. Check back often to see what's new!   Have a vendor you want us to consider?  Just send us an e-mail and let us know -  email  office@biginebraska.org.
P&C COMMENTARY

Is Your Agency A 'Rocky I' or a 'Rocky III'?
Not long ago, being a high-tech agency basically meant that you used Microsoft Office, an agency management system, and some sort of comparative rater.  But attendees at this spring's Elevate Conference - sponsored by trustedchoice.com and Agency Nation- were focused on how to do business a new way with technology, social media, and marketing.
Has the average Big "I" member agency reached a level of success where they are content, like Rocky Balboa In 'Rocky III'?  If you're a 'Rocky III' agency, you need to know that Clubber Lang is coming!

The Internet of Things In
Personal Lines
As a result of the Internet of Things (IoT), carriers can gather substantial amounts of data to underwrite more effectively. By accessing information available via platforms like social networks and crowd sourcing, carriers can begin to underwrite for lifestyle.
Meanwhile, sensing devices, such as those embedded in autos or home appliances, will enable carriers to assess how an insured drives or even what maintenance has been done on their dishwasher. And with public source and authorized private information, carriers can evaluate property or driving records without any involvement on the part of the consumer.
