The 2020 Census is Coming - Be Counted!

There is strength in numbers. The more people counted means more power and money for Michigan residents. Michigan stands to lose an estimated $1,800 per person per year in federal support for programs that use census data.

Historically, the census has missed disproportionate numbers of racial minorities, immigrants, young children and those living in poverty - "hard-to-count populations" - leading to inequality in political power, government funding and private-sector investment for these communities.

Census data is factored into a tremendous number of policy actions and funding formulas, at the federal but also at state and local levels, so it's important that everyone living in the United States on April 1, 2020 is counted.

We will continue to share information on the Census in the coming months. For more information, visit the Census website: https://2020census.gov/en.

Caregiver Support Groups added in Oceana County

Two Caregiver Support Groups have started in Oceana County, every Tuesday:
  • 10-11:30 a.m. every Tuesday at the Oceana County Council on Aging, 621 E. Main St., Hart
  • 12:30-2:30 p.m. every Tuesday at The Ladder Community Center, 67 N. State St., Shelby.
All sessions for both locations are drop-in - you can attend every week, or pick topics that are of interest to you. Respite care is available if needed.

For more information, contact Virginia Vazquez, facilitator, at 231-733-3531, or [email protected], or call Senior Resources Options Counselors at 231-733-3585.

CALL 2-1-1 offers telephone reassurance program

Community Access Line of the Lakeshore, CALL 2-1-1, is now offering a telephone reassurance program to help alleviate social isolation and loneliness in older adults in Muskegon, Oceana, and Southwest and Southeast Ottawa counties. Senior Resources awarded a grant for the program, through funding from the state Aging and Adult Services Agency.

The program covers all of Muskegon and Oceana counties, and the following in Ottawa County: Blendon, Georgetown, Holland, Jamestown, Olive, Park, Port Sheldon and Zeeland townships, and the cities of Holland, Hudsonville and Zeeland. (Four Pointes Center for Successful Aging covers the Tri-Cities and Northeast Ottawa County area.)

With the Telephone Reassurance Program, staff and trained volunteers make regularly scheduled phone calls to isolated and homebound seniors to provide wellness checks and socialization.

CALL 2-1-1 is also seeking volunteers for the program. Training is provided, and a volunteer commitment can be as little as two hours per week.

To learn more about the Telephone Reassurance Program, call 231-733-7003, 888-353-6717, or email [email protected].
