Sampling of Soil & Other Materials
At the beginning of August, Public Health and a third-party contractor collected samples from hazardous waste bins containing soil and other materials from the Aliso Canyon blowout and well-control operations. These samples were tested for a wide array of oil and gas chemicals to shed light on the makeup of materials released during the blowout and used to seal the well.

Given the potential significance of this information to the Aliso Canyon Disaster Health Research Study (ACDHRS) the ACDHRS Scientific Oversight Committee (SOC) has been intimately involved in guiding Public Health’s sampling and testing efforts. After reviewing the test results, it was recommended that additional samples be collected and stored for future use by the Health Study researchers if needed. On October 29, Public Health and the third-party contractor returned to the Aliso Canyon gas storage facility to collect the additional samples and store them for potential future use.

Under federal and state regulations, these hazardous waste bins are scheduled for safe removal and disposal by November 22. To view the full results of the hazardous waste bin sampling, please visit the resources page of the Aliso Canyon Disaster Health Research Study website.

Aliso Canyon Disaster Health Research Study: Goals & Priorities
Over the past several months, the SOC has been learning about the communities impacted by the Aliso Canyon blowout and their concerns. This knowledge is being incorporated into decisions on the ACDHRS goals and priority areas of focus. The SOC will produce a draft document of the ACDHRS goals and priorities which will be publicly available for a 3-4 week public comment period. Feedback from the community will be used to finalize the ACDHRS goals and priorities which will then be incorporated into the request for proposal.
Your Voice Matters!

Community Opinion Survey
The community is at the heart of the Aliso Canyon Disaster Health Research Study and it is critical that the Health Study reflect the community’s questions, concerns and priorities. To inform the Health Study, just last month, Public Health sponsored a health opinion survey of 400 residents who live in the North San Fernando Valley. This survey covered the largest geographical area of community members to date, up to 10 miles from the Aliso Canyon Storage Facility.
In addition to the telephone and online survey conducted by Probolsky, an online Community Opinion Survey is available for residents to complete between now and the end of November.Your opinions are important and your responses are confidential. Visit the ACDHRS web page for a direct link to the Community Opinion Survey. Results will provide insight into the community’s priority research topics for the Health Study. We welcome any additional feedback, concerns, or ideas that you would like to share, please consider submitting to our Community Feedback Log.

“All of this information continues to underscore the importance of expediting the launch of this $25 million Health Study. We are focused on supporting the independent and agency science experts on the Scientific Oversight Committee as they set the priorities for this important study,” said Dr. Paul Simon, Chief Science Officer for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
