President's Column

Welcome to a new year in the life of Mountain Vista UU! I am honored that you have elected me to be your Board President for the next two years. It will be a time for us all to roll with changes…a new Interim Minister, our rented space and the possibility of finding a home as we continue the search, an almost new Board, plus other leadership changes.

Both Pi Irwin , Vice President, and Paula Lipsitz , Secretary, continue on our Board. Besides having proven themselves to be strong Board members, they have experience of recent Board issues. We welcome new Board members:  Conrad Paul , Treasurer; Bill Casey , Trustee; Ann Bowling , Trustee; and Bob Seyfried , Trustee. Each has a long background in UU congregations here and elsewhere.

The Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, July 15, at the MVUU office. We will use Zoom to link in Board members who are out of town.

Good communication is important to me. I promise to listen to you. When you have concerns or congregation business, please send them to my MVUU mailbox, anne.tatum@mvuu.org . My phone number is in Breeze.

We are looking forward to the arrival of our Interim Minister, Rev. Samantha Wilson , who will greet us from the pulpit on September 1! From my recent reading and talking with Rev. Samantha, I know there is much more to this interim role than the spiritual direction; it is about us, who we are, and about working with us to achieve the directions that we want.

We have a Transition Team led by Tom Sawyer , and it includes Paula Lipsitz , Samar Adi , David Greene and Lisa Ponder-Gilby ! Yes, most of these volunteers were on the Interim Search team and already had an introduction to Rev. Samantha. They will help her in her housing search and planning. They also will arrange activities, starting in September, when you each will have a chance to talk with her in small groups. I am thankful for these volunteers to ease our way.

This is a time for us to step up and own our congregation. Our combined energy is what really makes the community work.

Anne Tatum , MVUU President

Lights For Liberty
Friday, July 12

On July 12th, Lights for Liberty will shine a light on the horrific abuses of the Trump administration in human detention camps.

In Tucson, people will arrive at Jacome Plaza, outside the Joel D. Valdez Main Library, 101 N. Stone, in downtown Tucson, beginning at 7pm. There will be music, speeches, and community education about how to influence our lawmakers to end the abuses.

Our voices will be raised. Our voices will be heard.

At approximately 8:30 pm we will light our candles (battery powered) and glowsticks in solidarity with hundreds of other vigils nationwide. We will end with a solemn procession around the perimeter of the plaza .

July Woven Basket Partner:  No More Deaths/Keep Tucson Together

No More Deaths is a humanitarian organization based in southern Arizona . We began in 2004 in the form of a coalition of community and faith groups, dedicated to stepping up efforts to stop the deaths of migrants in the desert and to achieving the enactment of a set of Faith-Based Principles for Immigration Reform . We later developed into an autonomous project. Since 2008 we have been an official ministry of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tucson .

The mission of No More Deaths is to end death and suffering in the Mexico–US borderlands through civil initiative : people of conscience working openly and in community to uphold fundamental human rights. Our work embraces the Faith-Based Principles for Immigration Reform and focuses on the following themes:

  • Direct aid that extends the right to provide humanitarian assistance
  • Witnessing and responding
  • Consciousness raising
  • Global movement building
  • Encouraging humane immigration policy
