Farmworker Fair Labor Practices Act Passes Senate and Assembly.  Governor poised to sign it into law.

From Richard Witt, Executive Director, RMM, June 20, 2019

The Farmworker Fair Labor Practices Act has many provisions that improve the lives of farmworkers. It is a pathway to equality granting them new rights, though rights long received by other New Yorkers. Most notable, and one that the farmworkers have long said is a priority, is the codifying into law a process that protects them while bargaining collectively. There is also for the first time, overtime pay, which will begin at sixty hours. In turn, there is a pathway to forty hours. It will be up to a Wage Board (made up of a Farm Bureau member, a member of the AFL-CIO, and an appointee of the Commissioner of Labor,) to determine whether this pathway is possible. There is a voluntary Day of Rest, though if a worker works on their day of rest, they must be paid overtime. There is now the requirement of Disability Insurance and several other provisions. In light of farmworkers being completely excluded previously, Rural & Migrant Ministry celebrates that farmworkers are no longer excluded, and we believe they are on the pathway to equality.

We have long said that our goal at Rural & Migrant Ministry, Inc. is to ensure that all are at the table. We renew our commitment to continue to stand with the farmworkers, and the farmers, as we work to implement this Bill, and to create an agricultural system in New York State that works for all.
Energy Savings for HRP Churches!
Thanks to the support of HRPGreen and the Budget, Finance and Property Committee of the Hudson River Presbytery, community solar through Solarize Our Congregation allows Hudson River Presbytery churches and their congregants to lock in savings of about ten percent on their electric bills for up to 20 years with no upfront cost while supporting a Care for Creation mission.

Community solar is a new paradigm that that enables electricity customers to receive the benefits of solar energy without installing panels on their own property. Subscribers enroll in a community solar project and save ten percent on the utility bill credits they receive. New York State has provided special incentives to solar developers to encourage them to build community solar projects to accelerate the transition to clean energy while increasing access to its benefits. Religious institutions are eligible to participate, unlike some other organizations and businesses.

Six churches and about twenty members of HRP congregations installed solar on their own property through last year's version of Solarize Our Congregation - many more wanted to but discovered that installing solar was not cost effective for them. Community solar eliminates that hurdle as there is no cost to participate and savings are guaranteed. In addition, churches will receive a $200 donation when they enroll and will receive a $150 donation when a member of their congregation enrolls.

Contact Nina Orville, Administrator of Solarize Our Congregation at [email protected] or 914-693-6222 to learn more or visit   www.SolarizeOurCongregation.org.

Through The Beautiful Gate Pilgrimage to Israel/Palestine with the Rev. Leslie Mott, Registration due by August 30, 2019

From the Rev. Leslie Mott

Dear Friends,

If you've never been to Israel/Palestine, this trip combines the elements of a pilgrimage, time to explore the history and rich archeological tapestry of the land, and an opportunity to experience and process the political and social paradoxes of this amazing country.

I've been on this trip several times, first as participant and then as co-leader, with a variety of church groups.  While this is not an official Hudson River Presbytery sponsored trip, I would like to offer this trip to the clergy and laity of the Presbytery for next February, 2020.
