Sunday Music Notes
This weekend, we welcome guest pianist and composer Chris Neiner to our service. His music is infused with a rich sense of harmony, clarity of ideas, and energy described as engaging, exciting, and fresh. These qualities originate from his passion to foster collaborative works with instrumentalists. His latest collaboration, Playtime, is a new work for horn, violin, and piano commissioned by a consortium of collegiate horn professors across the United States. Currently, he is the associate director and composer-in-residence for Music in the Circle, a CIM student-run organization offering concerts across University Circle in July 2019.
His works have appeared on programs by the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra, the Minnesota Sinfonia, the Copper Street Brass Quintet, the American Modern Ensemble, the Red Hedgehog Trio, Minnesota Symphonic Winds, the Rocky Ridge Music Center, the Cochran Chamber Commissioning Project, the Sewanee Summer Music Festival, and more. Neiner is pursuing a master's degree in composition at the Cleveland Institute of Music, studying with Keith Fitch.

Music in the Circle
We are a group of musicians from around the world who are passionate advocates for the arts. Our mission is to increase the accessibility of classical music to wider audiences through community engagement. Our programs include concerts for children and seniors as well as a festive gala performance at the Gartner Auditorium at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
A celebration of long-established partnerships between Cleveland's leading musical institutions, Music in the Circle hosts a distinguished roster of world-class artists from Germany, Switzerland, Israel and the United States, performing in various locations around University Circle. Our artists are committed to exploring innovative ways of engaging with different sectors of our community. They will be offered residency at Judson Manor.

We pray for those struggling with illness, convalescing, or homebound; patients, family, and staff in our surrounding hospitals; our Interim Pastor Search Committee, and those who left prayer requests in our Carpenter's Box.
Our prayers
are with member Carol Clint on the loss of her partner of 16 years, Isaiah Primous, who passed away on June 14 after a 4-year battle with brain cancer.

Notes from the Ministry of Faith Formation Meeting
More that fifteen members of the Covenant faith community gathered for a Ministry of Faith Formation (MoFF) meeting on Tuesday June 25. After thanking Jenny Conner and Jim Smekal for their recent leadership, moderator Matthew Garrett led the group through a brief presentation of “where we have been,” before suggesting some guidelines to help with planning for the upcoming program year.
Three smaller groups then began the tasks of a) brainstorming ideas to help nourish the spiritual development of our Covenant Community, b) committing to programming that might be realized this fall, and c) thinking about additional members of our faith community that can help transform discussed ideas into reality. The meeting concluded with the following plans for July:
1.
Children and Youth Education group
will meet on
July 9 at 1:00 pm
to continue discussions about programming for this age group on Sundays and beyond.
2.
Adult Education group
will meet on
July 16 at 7:00 pm
to plan for a series of Sunday Adult Forum Seminars and to think about additional opportunities for adult spiritual development.
3.
Music and Worship
is exploring the possibility of an interfaith peace observance this fall and considering ways that our weekly bulletin can speak more directly to the spiritual pulse of our church.

Friends of McGaffin Carillon Celebrate Five Years!

Last Saturday afternoon, the Friends of the McGaffin Carillon in University Circle (FMC) celebrated its first five years of existence with a gathering of donors for a British-style afternoon tea. George Leggiero played a concert of English music on the carillon and the restored Cragin Peal called the guests to the tea in the Herrick Room and Beckwith Hall. The big news is that the FMC is half-way to the goal of funding needed for a complete refurbishing of the instrument. During this year, FMC will continue to seek the remaining $375,000 needed to sign the contract for the restoration part of the project. This includes the disassembling of the instrument, cleaning and remounting the bells, creating new clappers, hiring cranes, painting the frame, and new electrical work.

A highlight of the afternoon was honoring founding president and longtime Covenant member Denise Horstman, who has shepherded the organization through its formative five years, with a desk bell from the FMC board, engraved with the FMC logo.

Summer Desserts for Transplant House
This summer we are again working with our mission partner, Transplant House, to provide desserts for the residents and their families.
