FIELD DAY!
Wednesday, June 12

Thank you to those of you who have already volunteered to help. Field day is a big program that requires LOTS of volunteers. Good news . . . it's also a SUPER FUN program and the volunteer commitment is small.

If you're able to sign up for a short shift we would really appreciate it. There are still a number of positions available. We need station hosts and would be especially grateful if a couple more people would sign up to arrive at 8:00 to help fill water balloons. Please sign up  here!

Kids can get wet and dirty at field day and the current weather report is calling for lots of sunshine. Please keep all this in mind when sending your child to school this Wednesday. Play clothes and close-toed shoes are highly recommended, as is sunscreen.

If you have questions you can email Barbara Chinn .

SBA RESULTS AVAILABLE ON JUNE 21

Each spring, Washington public school students in grades 3-8 and high school are tested in English language arts (ELA) and math, with exams called Smarted Balanced Assessments (SBA). Students in grades 5, 8, and high school are also tested in science, with an exam called the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS).

Individual scores for the SBA exams administered this past spring for ELA and math, are being delivered electronically from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI). OSPI allows the District to share these score reports electronically in PDF format.

Downloadable score reports will be added in Skyward Family Access on June 21. In an effort to use resources effectively, paper reports will only be available by request in the fall.  Only SBA ELA and math scores will be available in June. Science scores will not be available until the fall after OSPI releases those scores.

Directions to access the reports:
  1. To access Lake Washington School District's Skyward portal, click on the Family Access link on the district website.
  2. Log in to Skyward Family Access with your username and password.
  3. Click on the Reports Cards- Portfolio tab.
More information about state testing can be found here.

PARENT'S GUIDE TO SUCCESS

Parents' Guide to 5th grade Student Success
Wondering what your child is currently learning and what they need to know as they transition into the next grade?  PTA has featured one grade level every two weeks to ensure parents know and also offer a couple of ideas to support learning at home.

A Sample of What Your Child Will Be Working on in 5th Grade:
  • Identifying and judging evidence that supports particular ideas in an author's argument to change a reader's point of view
  • Integrating information from several print and digital sources to answer questions and solve problems
  • Writing opinions that offer reasoned arguments and provide facts and examples that are logically grouped to support the writer's point of view
  • Reporting on a topic or presenting an opinion with his or her own words, a logical sequence of ideas, sufficient facts and details, and formal English when appropriate
  • Generalizing the place-value system to include decimals, and calculating with decimals to the hundredths place (two places after the decimal)
  • Multiplying whole numbers quickly and accurately, for example 1,638 × 753, and dividing whole numbers in simple cases, such as dividing 6,971 by 63
  • Understanding the concept of volume, and solving word problems that involve volume
  • Graphing points in the coordinate plane (two dimensions) to solve problems
How to help your child at home:
  • Go to a play or musical with your child. Discuss the way the actors bring the words to life
  • Invite your child to read his or her writing out loud to other family members. Ask questions about your child's word choices and ideas.
  • Doing arithmetic with decimals, for example when balancing a checkbook.
  • Using the length, width, and depth of a garden plot to determine how many bags of garden soil to buy.

We recently met with the school district to walkthrough the property and approve our project list for the day.  As with past years, we will be supporting our teachers and staff in the classroom, as well as working on outdoor projects.  While we will have all of our typical volunteer opportunities, given our current project list, we are in need of the following (reminders will be sent if you sign up  ):

  • Donation of materials to add a large planter box to the outdoor classroom
  • Donation of flowers for our six planter boxes
  • Someone with photography skills to take photos that can be used in digital media after the event.
  • Someone willing to work with our site lead helping to keep the classroom work on task and moving on the actual day of service
If this is you and you are interested in volunteering your time (or if you have questions), please contact  Elaine Bentzinger.

Registration is currently open, so register today!  (When you get to the list of schools, be sure to scroll to the LWSD section near the bottom of the page to select Rockwell as your school)

TRANSLATION SERVICES AVAILABLE VIA ROCKWELL PTA

Rockwell is a flourishing community of diversity. In order to maintain our inclusive community and assist families with emerging proficiency in English, PTA and Rockwell have established two programs to  facilitate two-way communication.

PTA provides translators through our FACE (Family and Community Engagement) committee at school events, meetings and by translating forms into several languages. You can also select your preferred language on our PTA website by using the "select language" button.

Rockwell utilizes a phone service to eliminate communication barriers- the service offers more than 240 spoken languages and American Sign LanguageStop by the office to find out more or use the service for meetings, registration or any other need.

REGISTER EARLY FOR KINDERGARTEN
Tell your neighbors & friends

If you live in Lake Washington School District (LWSD) and your child will be five years old on or before August 31, 2019, now is the time to register them for Kindergarten!

Registration takes place at your neighborhood school during regular school hours through the beginning of the 2019-20 school year.

While registration will continue throughout the school year and summer, parents are highly encouraged to register students as soon as possible. Doing so helps ensure class sizes are balanced and adequate staff are hired in time for the new school year.

Visit the  Kindergarten Information webpage  for more information.
