Summer Covered Dish Lunch to Celebrate
119th Anniversary of Saint Andrew's First Worship Service
Sunday, July 14
|
On the evening of Sunday, July 14, 1900, the newly formed Saint Andrew’s Mission held its first worship service in Ferguson Hall above a storefront on Pendleton Street. In recognition of that anniversary (and because we are always looking for an excuse to eat good food together!), we will hold a covered dish lunch following the 10:30 AM mass on Sunday, July 14, next month.
We are also planning to take this opportunity to recognized and honor two members of our parish who, after many years of faithful service, have recently retired from leading key ministries at Saint Andrew’s. Specifically, at the 10:30 AM Mass and at the lunch that follows, we will be honoring
Sandra Kelley, for her many years of taking care of our Sunday altar flowers, and
Jim Grunwell, for his many years of overseeing our lay liturgical ministers — in addition to the many other ways in which both Sandra and Jim have faithfully offered their gifts and talents in service to God here at Saint Andrew’s. Please plan to join us for worship followed by food and fellowship as we gather to give thanks for these many gifts. Heavenly Ham and beverages will be provided. Side items, salads and desserts are needed, sign up by clicking the button below.

At Holy Cross Simpsonville | Monday evenings | 6-8 PM
September 2019 – June 2020

Education for Ministry (EfM) is an extension program in theological education from the School of Theology at the University of the South at Sewanee. It is a small-group study with six to 12 people who are in various stages of learning about the Old Testament, the New Testament, church history, and theology through study, reflection, and prayer. The cost for the course is $375 per year, which includes the cost of all materials except a bible. EfM is a four-year course but participants commit to one year at a time. Register by calling Bobbie Godwin at 843-287-3760. Deadline for registration is July 14, 2019.

With the opening of the Homewood Suites parking garage (across Markley Street), folks coming to Saint Andrew’s now have another parking option for evening or weekend worship or other church events. Thus, on evenings and weekends, you can now park in the designated "permit parking only" spots in the Homewood Suites parking garage—in addition to parking in spots marked with yellow rectangles or white numbers in the Pendleton Street Baptist parking lot (adjacent to the church). Starting in July, you will need to have a Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church parking sticker on your car in order to use the permit parking (and preferably have it affixed to your rear window). The stickers are available in the Parish Office.
A reminder that you should never park in red-numbered spots in the parking lot adjacent to the church, since Pendleton Street Baptist Church has set those aside for paid hourly parking via a phone app (unless you plan to pay via the app).
Also, if you are visiting the church during weekday business hours, you should try to find street parking or use one of the available yellow rectangle spots in the adjacent parking lot.

Sunday Altar Flower Dedications Update
with New Suggested Donation Range ($50-$100)
|
Every Sunday, we have the opportunity to offer a special dedication of the altar flowers in honor, memory, or celebration of loved ones. As many of you know, we were blessed for many years by the gift of Sandra Kelley's skill and artistry in finding and arranging the flowers each week--as we were also the beneficiaries of Sandra's impressive commitment to doing that work at such a low cost to the parish (which accounted for the low suggested donation that we have had for altar flowers to date).
After many years of faithful service, Sandra recently retired from that ministry, and we have been working to come up with alternative arrangements going forward. For the foreseeable future, we have made arrangements with a retired florist to provide flowers each week at a cost to the church of $100.00 per Sunday.
Recognizing that this is a significant increase in cost to the church, we are increasing our suggested donation for dedications, such that we are now suggesting that donations for dedicating flowers be in the range of $50.00 to $100.00 for a Sunday.
If you would like to sign up for a Sunday, please see the sign up sheet on the bulletin in the Parish Hall. You may place a check in the offering plate with "Altar Flowers" noted in the memo.
Finally, if you have an interest in trying to organize or serve in a flower guild that would consist of parish volunteers who could be responsible for the altar flowers each week--or if you have other ideas about how we could provide altar flowers at a lower cost, please let our
Father Gary or our senior warden,
Riley Owens, know.

Upcoming Safe Church Training Opportunities
|
Safe Church training is important for anyone volunteering in children's ministries, or doing any lay ministry, such as lay eucharistic visitors, involving potentially one-on-one ministry within the parish. We also encourage all parishioners, especially those in positions of leadership - such as vestry members and other ministry area leaders, to get Safe Church certified.
Please make sure to let our parish office know if you sign up for one of these classes. (We are also working to set up a training session at Saint Andrew's in the near future.)
More info on Safe Church Training here.

Sing with the Summer Choir
|
During the summer, music in our Sunday Masses is led by the Saint Andrew's Summer Choir, which is made up of choir members who gather on Sunday mornings at 9:30 AM (and not on Wednesday evenings), to prepare the music for each Sunday 10:30 AM Mass. With this limited time commitment the Summer Choir is an excellent opportunity for prospective new members of the choir to "try us out" for a Sunday or two (or more). We always need additional singers--especially altos--to reinforce our sections, so please consider joining the Summer Choir. If you have questions, please contact the Parish Office--or just show up on Sunday morning!

Sunday Coffee Hour Refreshments
|
We are blessed to be a growing parish, and one of the ways that we offer hospitality to our many visitors is through our coffee hour after the 10:30 AM mass every Sunday. Please consider signing up for a Sunday on one of the sign up sheets hanging on the parish bulletin board.

Nursery During 10:30 AM Mass Every Sunday
|
Staff member Amanda Abreu oversees our Sunday morning nursery during the 10:30 AM Mass. Going forward, we need at least one parish volunteer each Sunday to serve as our second nursery caregiver. Thanks to those parishioners who have already volunteered to help. If you have gifts for working with infants and young children--and have "Safe Church" training, we could use your help! If you are interested, please
e-mail Amanda.
