BABC President
Director, Splunk

Dear Friends of the BABC,

As the Californian sun begins to shine on us a little longer, it is with great happiness I can say we have surpassed "Gloom June" with the most beautiful weather. Summer is here!

June was a very busy month for the BABC. On June 11th we started the month's events with a strong showing at our Young Professionals Happy Hour at Premier Member Werqwise. June's Happy Hour was co-hosted with the British Benevolent Society , and with a great attendance, the night was an excellent opportunity for all involved to network and get further involved with those in the BABC and BBS community.

Our active Young Professionals Committee also hosted our Annual British-American Pub Quiz which was an excellent night of combined trivia and networking. Kindly hosted by Young Professional Committee member William Goff, the night was a great success. Congratulations to this years winners Team Florin Pensions and many thanks to our hosts at  Harrington's Bar and Grill  along with our many sponsors in-kind. Check out the photos from the event  here and event write up here

Last week, the BABC held our 63rd Annual General Meeting which was a resounding success. Big thanks to all who attended and congratulations to re-elected and newly appointed Board Members, the BABC are looking forward to the coming year working with you. During the meeting we were proud to announce strong annual financials, showcase some of our great events as well as our impressive marketing statistics!

The BABC office have also been hard at work preparing for some big events coming up in July.

On July 9th we have our ever-popular Young Professionals Happy Hour at Premier Member Werqwise! This month we have an exciting performance from Keeva Acapella, make sure to come along and join us, so sign up here

Additionally, the British American Business Council Northern California,  French American Chamber of Commerce San Francisco , and  German American Business Association  invite you to join us for our third collaboration event of the year, the Young Professionals European Networking Mixer. Come and enjoy some drinks and nibbles in the company of like-minded young professionals from different countries, businesses and industries. This event will provide you with a chance to meet and talk about your careers and businesses, and share tips on life in the Bay Area.

Finally yet importantly, as you will see from our new and renewing member sections further down in this newsletter, the BABC community remains as strong and vibrant as ever. I hope you will join me in welcoming the newest members of our growing and dynamic community - you will find information about them below. Please take a moment to visit their websites and contact Jo Healey if you would like to learn more.

Best,

From The Consul General's Desk

Dear friends and members of the BABC,

As we head in to July, the leadership contest for the Conservative Party is in full swing.

Instead of focusing on the political, though, I wanted to use this month's column to focus on something you will also have no doubt noticed around town:  Pride month.

All over San Francisco, I'm seeing rainbow flags and other items symbolising the celebration for the LGBT community. This year's festivities are sure to be a fantastic recognition of the progress that has been made for LGBT rights.

In the UK, we've had civil partnerships for over a decade, and equal marriages since 2014. And it's been more than 50 years since we began the process of decriminalization of homosexuality in the UK (though, one might well wonder why it took us so long).

We've come a long way in government, as well. The Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force march in full uniform at Pride Parades across UK. And here's an unexpected fact: who would have thought that, last year, MI5 would be named the UK's most LGBTQ-friendly employer. The UK Government works to promote equality and inclusivity in our own public service and we also make the case for this in the rest of the world, especially in countries where there is discrimination of LGBT communities. The Foreign Office is committed to supporting LGBT rights and has dedicated more than a $1 million to appropriate causes.

The UK Government is marching in 15 cities across the US this year. And the Consulate here has expanded its Pride activities. From a bolstered 22-person contingent in Seattle (in only our second year) to new events and cities right here in the Bay Area. Watch for us later in the year as we join Oakland Pride and the Castro Street Fair for the first time this year.

Andrew Whittaker,
HM Consul General

BABC YP Happy Hour
June 11th 2019

The BABC Young Professionals Committee were delighted to welcome new and returning attendees to our staple Happy Hour held every 2nd Tuesday of the month. We were very grateful to co-host with BABC Community Partner the  British Benevolent Society (BBS) and bring together members from both our organizations.

We would like to thank everyone that supported the event by coming along, despite the San Francisco heat wave! It was great to see so many individuals coming together from a wide array of careers and cultural backgrounds as well as making connections to those who were members of both BBS and the BABC!

Courtesy of our Wine Sponsor  Penfolds our guests were treated to their 19 Crimes Red Blend & 19 Crimes Hard Chardonnay.

We would like to extend special thanks to  Werqwise, who as always made us all very welcome.

The BABC Happy Hour runs on the customary second Tuesday of every month, so make sure to add this to your calendar! We are delighted that our BABC Happy Hours will continue to be sponsored by world-renowned Australian wine makers,  Penfolds.

So if you are looking to not only expand your bay area network but your wine palette too make sure to register for July's Happy Hour.

BABC Young Professionals Pub Quiz - June 24th 2019

On the night of Monday June 24th, the BABC Young Professionals hosted the Annual Great British American Pub Quiz at our favorite pub,  Harrington's Bar and Grill. This year the coveted trophy was fiercely contested by 17 teams of intrepid quizzers hailing from both the UK and the States, some veterans of the game, and some fresh faced rookies.

The quiz, hosted by talented quiz master, William Goff, quiz creator Kirsty Cannon and BABC volunteers extraordinaire Corey Hastings and Sofia Pavlova, consisted of 8 rounds of questions designed to test both British and American knowledge.

1st Place - Team Florin Pensions, who went away with 4 tickets to a weekday Giants Game PLUS 4 Giants Baseball Caps! As well as getting their name engraved on BABC Pub Quiz Florin Pensions Cup kindly donated by Florin Pensions themselves! Congratulations!

2nd Place - Team BABLeap, went away with four RSM branded Brookstone bottle openers and four bottles of Penfolds wine! Enjoy everyone!

3rd Place - Team Wilton & Bain, took home 4 Furnished Quarters goody bags filled with lots of exciting prizes!

And finally we wanted  to congratulate Make the BABC Great Again for winning this years best team name, and 4 Robert Walters branded water bottles to go with their excellent team name!

Also, we wanted to extend our gratitude and appreciation to our proud sponsors for their help making this all possible.

To those who couldn't make it, sorry we missed you, but don't worry, the BABC's Great British-American Pub Quiz is an annual affair, so make sure you come along next time!

Penningtons Manches has announced it is to merge with Thomas Cooper, a specialist firm known for its work in shipping, international trade and international arbitration with offices in London, Paris, Madrid, Piraeus, Singapore and Sao Paulo.

Penningtons Manches Cooper, the integrated business, will have a combined turnover of over £90 million.

Building on the robust and rapid growth of Penningtons Manches' international litigation and arbitration practice, the merger brings Thomas Cooper's significant strength and capabilities in the field to complement the firm's existing areas of expertise. Crucially, it will also provide access to the key international arbitration hubs of Paris and Singapore.

The UK government has launched a consultation on the most significant reform of Companies House since its establishment in 1844.
The consultation, which is open until 5 August 2019, aims to strengthen the role of Companies House in supporting UK efforts to combat economic crime whilst maintaining the UK's reputation as the best place to start and grow a business.
A number of reforms are envisaged including:
  • Verification of the identity of individuals who have a key role in companies, such as directors, Persons with Significant Control and those filing information for the company, during the incorporation and filing processes.
  • Improving the accuracy and usability of data on the register by extending the power of Companies House to verify and investigate data entered on the register and enabling it to remove inaccurate information; investment in technology and training to make the register more efficient, effective and resilient.
  • Effective protection of personal data.
  • Ensuring compliance, sharing intelligence and other measures to deter abuse of corporate entities through crosschecks against data held by other government and private sector bodies.
Third party agents acting for companies are already required by the Money Laundering Regulations to carry out customer due diligence checks on their customers, which includes verifying their identity. The government is not proposing to duplicate these checks and is likely to focus its attention on incorporations and filings from individuals and those not supervised by official money laundering bodies.
Louise Smyth, Chief Executive of Companies House, said:
'This package of reforms represents a significant milestone for Companies House, as they will enable us to play a greater part in tackling economic crime, protecting directors from identity theft and fraud and improving the accuracy of the register.'

Forms P11D, which report details of benefits and certain expenses provided to employees and directors for the year ended 5 April 2019, are due for submission to HMRC by 6 July 2019.
The process of gathering the necessary information can take some time, so it is important that this process is not left to the last minute.

Employees usually pay tax on benefits via a PAYE coding adjustment or through the Self Assessment system. Significant changes were introduced to the rules for reporting expenses from 6 April 2016.
Some employers now 'payroll' benefits and in these cases the benefits do not need to be reported on a Form P11D, but employers should advise employees of the amount of benefits being payrolled.

Irrespective of whether the benefits are being reported via Forms P11D or payrolled, the employer must pay Class 1A National Insurance Contributions at 13.8% on the provision of most benefits. The calculation of this liability is detailed on the P11D(b) form. The deadline for payment of the Class 1A NIC is 19th July (or 22nd July for cleared electronic payment).

HMRC produce an expenses and benefits toolkit. The toolkit consists of a checklist which may be used by advisers or employers to check they are completing the forms correctly.

If you would like any help with the completion of the forms or the calculation of the associated Class 1A NIC, please contact:
