and Laurel Herbeck
Sunday, July 21
1:00 - 3:00pm
NBG Studio
Nine NBG members have just returned from a five-day fieldtrip to the Focus On Book Arts (FOBA) biennial conference in Forest Grove, Oregon. FOBA's all-volunteer staff put together an outstanding creative experience with five days of classes taught by world-class book artists. Mary, Connie, Margo, Linda, Corlis, Susan, Gayle, Laurel and Robin gained skills in East Asian stab-binding, bojagi paper technique, eco-printing, non-adhesive binding, printing on metal plates, Ethiopian binding, closure devices, distressed board covers, casements and more. After six hours of classes each day, they attended social events and lectures in the evenings. Each night they returned to dorm accommodations on the idyllic Pacific University campus exhausted, happy, and full of new ideas. For eight of them, it was their first FOBA but definitely not the last. This conference overflowed with artists inspiring one another, making new friends and exchanging ideas. Between the Trade Show and the Artist's Fair they all acquired a bounty of book art treasures, tools, and materials that somehow fit in their luggage for the trip home.
Come to the July meeting to be inspired by their FOBA projects and see the new tools and materials they brought back!
We will also make a small model book using a nifty non-adhesive, non-sewn binding technique. You'll see...it's clever!

The Tunnel Book is a unique layered structure, designed to create a simple or complex design in three-dimensional space. It is reminiscent of the dioramas of our youth, theatre books and pop-ups. While the sides are always accordion folded, tunnel books may include covers, painted papers, collage, drawing, painting and text. In this workshop we will design and develop our ideas on Friday night and create the final book on Saturday. This workshop is suitable for all levels of experience.
