Earlier this week we learned that Elsa Abele, a pioneer in the field of social pragmatics, particularly as it relates to Asperger Syndrome, passed away. To honor her legacy, MGH Aspire Executive Director, Scott McLeod, reflects on Elsa's expertise in the field, describing ways in which she made a significant impact on his work and within the autism community. MGH Aspire summer programming has started and we are looking forward to hearing all about our participant's exciting new adventures this month. MGH Aspire is inviting Dads and Father Figures with kids on the autism spectrum to join us for a fun night of socializing and comradery. Dads will enjoy a casual pizza dinner together around an outdoor campfire at Hale Reservation in Westwood, MA. This event is free and for adults only. Your child does not need to be currently participating in an MGH Aspire program to register for this event. Registration is required. Call 781-860-1900 to RSVP.
MGH Aspire's child programs offer children and young adolescents a variety of opportunities to develop and practice key skills in naturalistic childhood contexts. Our goal is to help children better understand themselves and others through our "3S" model: self-awareness, stress management, and social competency. Applications for fall child programs must be submitted by Saturday, August 31st. To view the fall schedule, click here.
Teen and adult groups focus on teaching ways of thinking and being social, life skills, relationship and friendship development as well as stress management and self-awareness. Participants practice skills and begin to see themselves as part of a community of learners. The groups are structured around interest-based activities, supportive discussions, social coaching, direct instruction and community outings. Applications for fall teen & adult programs must be submitted by Saturday, August 31st. Our internship program carefully matches you and your needs with trained employers who are working to develop their talent. We support employers in understanding how to work with you, while helping you solidify the skills that will make you the best fit for them. Find a placement that will help you gain experience matched your skill set. Are you a parent of a child with autism? Are you interested in verbal and physical management training for aggressive behaviors? If your child is a patient of the Lurie Center and between 5 and 12 years old, you may be eligible to participate in our Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training . This 12-week study is testing if CPI training helps parent stress and improves quality of life. Sessions are at the Lurie Center and compensation is provided for time and travel.
