Southern Care Hospice Needs Volunteers

What Can I do This Summer to Make a Difference in the Lives of Others?

Now that summer is starting and many are thinking what is something different I could do this summer? I have the perfect suggestion!! Why not give some of your time to volunteering!

Here at Southern Care Hospice there are a lot of ways you can get involved in volunteering, and the rewards of doing something for somebody else far out ways the satisfaction of any time that you give!! Here at Southern Care Hospice we have a variety of programs you can choose from; Patient and Family Support, Bereavement mail outs that are done here at the office , helping to answer phones at the office, helping at community events such as health fairs, festivals ,birthday parties and special events at several of the nursing facilities we visit. There are other ways you can get involved such as making blankets for our patients, baking homemade bake goods, and helping to do yard work such as cleaning flower beds and cut grass for a patient! We even have a Teen Volunteer Program for high school students that are 16 or older, this is a great way for them to receive community service hours for applying for college scholarship applications.

The ways you can make a difference in the life of another are endless! I encouraged everyone to please consider volunteering to help others in 2019! Not only does it help them and you, but it also improves the community you live in!

Southern Care Hospice-Hurricane Relief Boxes

Southern Care Hospice is looking for people in our community who will be willing to sponsor a Hurricane Relief Box for our patients here in our service area.

As you know Hurricane season is fast approaching and we are trying to help our patients who are living at home to have a preparation box so if we do have a hurricane in our area they will have extra supplies they will need in time of emergency. Our goal is to collect 20 boxes between now and August 1, 2019. The following list is items we are looking for: Churches, civic clubs or people in the community this would be a great project to sponsor this summer! You may pick several items from the list to go in your box!

Nonperishable canned goods, handheld manual can opener

Flashlights with batteries or battery operated lanterns

Water purification tablets

Bottled water

Paper plates, solo cups, paper towels

Hand wipes/baby wipes

Self-light bag of charcoal

Peanut butter crackers, cookies, individually bagged potato chips, granola bars

Canned soft drinks

5 Interesting Facts about Hospice Care of which you're not aware of!!

As a Volunteer Coordinator for Southern Care Hospice I enjoy teaching people new things about hospice of which you are not aware, because life is a never ending journey of learning! Here are five facts you may not be aware of about hospice care.

At Southern Care Hospice we do not focus on dying but "living"! Our goal is to help you have the best quality of life regardless of whether you live for 2 years or 6 months. Our goal is to help minimalize your pain so that you can enjoy your life! We are not here to speed up the process nor can we stop the process, we are here for as long as we are needed! The only one who knows when any of us will leave this earth is the good Lord in Heaven! We are here to help take care of you!
At Southern Care Hospice, we are here to help patients in many different ways. Along with our outstanding nursing services who visit patients twice a week and if needed more, we have a full time chaplain Pastor Andy Peavy who provides spiritual support to patients, Linda Hall our Social Worker can help with different problems the patient and caregiver could be facing financially or otherwise during this time. Our Volunteers who can provide companionship visits or respite sitting for the care giver to run errands. Our hospice aides Christina or Mary who can help patients with their bath or other personnel needs.
At Southern Care Hospice we believe hospice care is a service not a place. We will come take care of you regardless of where you live.
One question people in the community will as is, how is hospice care services covered financially? Medicare, Medicaid and other private insurance policies will help cover the patient medical expenses such as medications or equipment related to the diagnosis for which they are admitted.
Many times people think we only take care of patients with different types of end stage cancers, however, this is not true. We also take care of other end stage diagnosis such as heart disease, lung disease (COPD, Emphysema) Lou Gehrig's disease, Alzheimer's disease, Liver Failure, etc....

Nathanael Salter was selected by the Evergreen Chamber of Commerce to participate in the Huntingdon College and Community Development Scholars Programs. Nathanael Salter is a senior at Sparta Academy He is the son of Connery and Paula Salter of Evergreen. Congratulations Nathanael, we are very proud of you!

Evergreen student participates in economic and community development program at Huntingdon College

Montgomery, Ala.- Nathanael Salter of Evergreen was one of the 32 rising high school seniors who participated in the third annual Huntingdon College Economic and Community Development Scholars Program June 25-27. Planned in partnership with and sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce Association of Alabama, the Economic Development Association of Alabama, and the Alabama Department of Commerce, ECDS introduced young citizens who are poised to begin their professional journeys to the importance of economic and community development.

The students met with professionals seasoned in the processes of economic and community development, and participated in a two-day economic development simulation. Participants "graduated" from the program wearing hard hats for ground-breaking and ribbon-cutting simulations.

"We had an incredibly impressive collection of high school students on our campus last week," said Huntingdon senior vice president Anthony Leigh, an architect of the program. "These students are difference makers in their schools and their communities. I am confident they have returned to their communities enlightened about what economic and community developers do, and we hope that knowledge has given them an appreciation for the work of growing and bettering their community and our state."
