Upper School Clubs Encourage Students to Explore Interests and Share Knowledge
Spencer B. '20 spearheaded the Upper School Chess Club hoping to share his love of the game with classmates.

"I really wanted people to have fun with it," he said. "I saw this as an opportunity to integrate not only my own passion for it, but to get other people involved."

The Chess Club is one of four new Upper School clubs this year; the other new ones are Improv, International Thespian Society, and Kodiak Spirit. A Kindness Club is slated for approval. Students are required to join at least one club each year. They may currently choose from 14 clubs, ranging from robotics to National Honor Society to Garage Band. KICS (Kodiaks Investing in the Community through Service) is a philanthropic club that grants money from concession sales during athletic games to worthy causes and nonprofits in the community.

"Clubs allow for teachers to feed student curiosity outside of the traditional academic realm and also allow for students to gain an appreciation for passions and unique skill-sets beyond the classroom," said Nicole Goyette, Middle School and Upper School division director.

Re-enrollment and Indexed Tuition Deadlines Approaching

Each year as we prepare for the re-enrollment process, we look to streamline and simplify the time and energy it takes for families to successfully re-enroll their students. The first step of preparing for re-enrollment is marking February 1-15, 2020, on your calendar.
Tuition Lock Program
February 1-15, 2020, will serve as the period of time to re-enroll your student(s). Re-enrollment must be complete by February 15 to secure your student's spot in the class and to receive the benefit of locked tuition. After February 15, the 2020-2021 tuition increases will take effect. Read about this loyalty initiative on our website.

Applying for Indexed Tuition
Indexed Tuition applications must be submitted yearly and are due no later than February 1, 2020. Applications received after that date will be considered only after on-time applications have been reviewed and decisions will be made based on available funding.

Click here to review the steps for submitting Indexed Tuition materials.

Please feel free to contact Joy Maguire-Parsons, Director of Admission, with any questions about re-enrollment, applying for Indexed Tuition, and/or the tuition lock program. She may be reached at [email protected] or (719) 434-3520.

Model UN Attends Conference in Geneva
Eleven Upper School students started the new year in Geneva, Switzerland, at the FerMUN Conference. The Model United Nations delegation from The Colorado Springs School participated alongside 51 schools from 23 countries during a year that coincides with the 75th anniversary of the United Nations. FerMUN welcomed students to the aptly named "Futurecasters" conference with a theme recognizing the global youth movement in which young people want to make a difference in the world. Model UN conferences encourage students to participate in United Nations-like simulations in which students gain experience in diplomacy and international relations. Students thoroughly research current topics and learn to approach problem-solving and resolutions with diverse perspectives and global consequences. Students formed working relationships during FerMUN with students from Turkey, Italy, New Zealand, Rwanda, Morocco, Emirates, El Salvador, the U.K. and Pakistan, among others.

Unique from other high school conferences, FerMUN is a multilingual conference, encouraging students to exchange ideas in English, French, and Spanish with the assistance of real-time interpreters and translators.  Bella M. '20  and  Chloe L. '22  participated in a trilingual council. While the conference didn't do formal awards and instead focused on a unifying youth movement,  Aadi N. '21  used his French language skills in addition to English to lobby and develop resolutions in an act that earned him impromptu peer recognition as "Best Delegate."

Alair F. '21  was interviewed by a reporter from Paris and will be featured in an article later this month.  Audrey B. '21  was selected to the conference's Press Team under the mentorship of the International Telecommunications Union. She gained valuable experience contributing to social media posts, blogs, and website updates for the conference.

During the students' travel to Geneva they met Andrew Bremberg, the Permanent Representative of the USA to the Office of the UN and Other International Organizations in Geneva. Additionally, they met many diplomats and state department officials.
Middle School's 2020 National Geographic GeoBee
Eighth grader Micah R. '24 took first place Tuesday in the The Colorado Spring School's annual National Geographic GeoBee. Seventh grader Norah O. '25 took second place, and 8th grader Adhista E. '24 took third place.

Thirteen middle school students qualified to participate. The other students included 6th graders Connor M. '26, Wyatt N. '26, Emmi M. '26, and Tejin M. '26; 7th graders Hayden D. '25, Pedro G. '25, and Elliott C. '25; and 8th graders Alex H. '24, Taylor H. '24, and Nora V. '24.

Micah will take a qualifying written exam to know if he advances to the State GeoBee, which will be held this spring in Denver.

The GeoBee was developed in 1989 to boost geography knowledge among young people. During the past three decades, 120 million students have learned about the world by participating in the competition.
6th Grade Mystery Unit: The Case of the Missing Bearded Dragon Solved
Fred, the beloved bearded dragon, is back! He went missing last week as part of the 6th grade Mystery Unit, an interdisciplinary study between Mr. Gaylord's science class and Mrs. Hatch's English class. Fred is part of Mr. Gaylord's classroom. Students gathered and analyzed evidence such as fingerprints and footprints left at the scene, interviewed potential suspects, and wrote a news story. The evidence led them to their top suspect, Admission Director Joy Maguire-Parsons. It wasn't until Fourth Judicial District Judge Deborah Grohs, who spoke with students about criminal cases, questioned Mrs. Maguire-Parsons that she came clean with what happened. Mrs. Maquire-Parsons said it was an honest mistake, that she took Fred home one night and accidentally lost him inside her home. She told students she had been afraid to admit that she had misplaced him. "I found Fred last night and brought him back this morning. He's in my office now." Sixth graders were happy to be reunited with Fred. View more photos here.
