"What's Your Story?"

Create an Arpillera with Artist Sharon Gonce

Patricia Clarke Studio
July 20th and August 10th, 2019

In a day long workshop learn the South American craft of creating personal story cloths.  These cloths are inspired by the spirit of Patricia Clarke's award-winning portraiture project Facing Ourselves, coming to Carpinteria in October, 2019.

The Arpillera Movement originated in 1974 in Chile, when groups of women used scraps of fabric, leather, felt, wood and hand stitching to create narratives of the poverty, violence and repression under General Pinochet's dictatorship.  These arpilleras were secretly distributed and sold to earn money for the women whose families had forcibly disappeared.

None of these "desaparecidos" have ever been found.

Since that time, making arpilleras have become popular outside of Chile.  They have given people in the shantytowns of Peru a way to depict their everyday life, share their stories and earn money for their families.

JULY 20th and AUGUST 10th
Patricia Clarke Studio // 410 Palm Avenue, A-18 // Carpinteria
10 am to 5 pm - $120.00 for one workshop, or $180.00 for both.
