SCAEA November 2018 Newsletter
President's Palette
Hello!

Our SCAEA conference is November 30th through December 2nd. This conference promises to be engaging, inspiring and informational. I hope that you have registered for the conference and the sessions that interest you. If not, there is still time!

There are four general sessions and 95 smaller class sessions, many of which are hands on.  Three of our general sessions are visual artists sharing their stories of "Inspiration and Process": Mary Whyte, Gerry Wubben and Beatrice Coron, who work in dramatically different ways and media. You will certainly be inspired by one, if not all of them.

Although the diverse offerings are fantastic, one of the best things about a conference are the opportunities to meet other art educators and to share, learn and collaborate. Through the years, some of the greatest art room ideas have been gleaned through conversations with other art teachers before or after a class. In the next few weeks, please be thinking about what you need to improve your teaching life. As art educators we love art, children and teaching, but sometimes we need time away to refill our tanks and add tools to our box. What do you need and how can we assist you? The SCAEA board and I look forward to seeing you in Greenville!

Cynthia

Higher Ed Division News from Tracey Hunter-Doniger
We have had a very busy fall 2018. Multiple members of the SCAEA Higher Ed Division presented at several conferences, including the Palmetto State Art Education Conference held this year in Charleston. As you may know there is a visual art teacher shortage. SCAEA Higher Ed members are actively investigating solutions to remedy this issue.  We are looking forward to the SCAEA conference in November where many art education scholars will share their knowledge and pedagogy, and where we will elect a new Higher Ed Division Representative.

Important Reminder for Retired Educators
Don't forget about the Retired Educators Exhibit that will take place during this year's conference in Greenville, SC.  You can still submit up to two images to Susanne Gunter by November 16th.  See the flyer for more details.

Inspiring Art
Shawn Huckins "obliterates" history in his new acrylic paintings.  In this series, Huckins creates a conversation with the viewer about how quickly long standing ideals, policies, and beliefs can be wiped out with a single key stroke.  His meticulous paintings borrow imagery from early American paintings and portraiture and juxtapose them with the illusion of contemporary digital processes.  For more information about his process and the concept behind this series, click HERE.
