Three On A String Sunday
The popular Birmingham-based ensemble Three on a String is celebrating their 48th anniversary with lively back to back performances here at Vestavia Methodist. Each service will feature the delightful mix of folk, jazz, bluegrass, gospel, and country music with a generous helping of humor for which the group is so well known.

Join us in worship this Sunday, July 7, as Three On A String leads us at both the 8:30 and 11:00 am services in our brand-new Tyson Hall. You won't want to miss this exciting Sunday in the life of our church.
Holiday Closure Next Week
In celebration of Independence Day, the church offices will be closed on Thursday, July 4, and Friday, July 5, this week. We hope you have a wonderful and safe holiday with your family.
New Sermon Series
Music and song can connect with human beings at the deepest levels. Even with pastors! During the month of July, each of our pastors will be preaching about a hymn or song that deeply affected their faith journey. Each pastor will repeat their particular sermon at each service during the month - so you will hear them all. We kick off our new sermon series "Songs from the Heart" on Sunday, July 14. Join us every week for this exciting new series!
Joint Sunday School Lesson
Please join us this Sunday, July 7, at 9:45 am, in the Fellowship Hall for a joint Sunday School lesson from Gideons International. Come listen as they share inspirational stories of their work in the U.S. and abroad to make the Word of God available to everyone and work with the local church to reach souls for Christ.
Boomers and Beyond Sock Hop
Find your poodle skirt or some Brylcreem and come have a great evening of dancing, food, and movie clips as we go back in time to the fabulous 1950's. The Sock Hop will be July 18, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm, in the Fellowship Hall. The cost is $10/person, which will include your meal of hot dogs, hamburgers, fries, and make your own sundae bar. You can invite your friends and we won't be checking IDs at the door. Everyone will need to make a reservation by July 8. For more information, contact Jim Frazier ([email protected] / 769-0126).
Christmas in July
Christmas in July is back again! We had such great success from last year's event, we decided to bring it back. From July 14 through 21, we will collect new, unwrapped toys for our annual Student Ministries Breakfast in December. Please bring your toys to any of the blue tubs around the church during that week. The blue tubs will be located in the main church office and on the student ministries' floor. Thank you in advance for your help to making a child's Christmas extra special this year.
July Mission Minute
This July, we would like to highlight our mission partners that aid and support the homeless in our area. We work with three different organizations through actions, giving, or both: First Light, Interfaith of the YWCA, and Family Promise of Birmingham. All of these organizations have been partners with VHUMC for a long time. We have several Sunday School classes involved with helping, serving, and volunteering with each group on a monthly basis. You can visit their websites for more information on how you can help with daily needs or support some of their bigger fundraisers.

Family Promise of Birmingham, who we just hosted in June, is having their fundraising event on July 18 at Brookwood Village. If you are interested in being a part of this, would like tickets, or donate an auction item, please contact Rachael Hayes ([email protected]) for more information. You will not want to miss this event!

We also serve the homeless by making PB&J sandwiches each winter when the warming stations open downtown. This group has grown from two volunteers to over fifteen in just a few months. If you are interested in making sandwiches next winter, watch for our social media posts for ways to make an impact with our homeless community.
Please Welcome New Members
Please help our two newest families feel welcome at VHUMC:

Caleb Riggs & Jenni Moon are graduate students at Samford (he
in nursing and she in PA school). They will be married at VHUMC next May (2020). They typically attend the 9:45 worship service.

Grant & Anna-Wesley Corhern (Hunt:
23mos; Mary-Nelson: 8mos) are also new to our community. Anna-Wesley attended VHUMC when her family lived here over 20 years ago, so it's great to have the whole family here now. They've attended the 9:45 and 11:00 traditional services.

Please look for them at worship and give them a warm welcome.
8th/9thGrade ASP Recap
This past week 46 of our eighth and ninth graders along with 16 adults traveled on our first of two ASP summer mission trips. Our team worked in Jonesville, VA on a variety of projects including flooring, siding, and deck/stair repair. Words and pictures cannot adequately convey the impact our students and adults experienced from our homeowners and the way in which God moved throughout the week. The theme for the week was "Be the Peace" and each day we reflected on how God's peace or Shalom impacts our life and how we can be the peace for others. Check out the link to see a small video about or trip or visit our Thrive Student Ministries Facebook page to see all of the pictures. For more information about Thrive and our volunteer opportunities please contact Jeremiah Stone ([email protected]/ 769-0135).

Do You Shop on Amazon
Did you know that when you shop on Amazon, you can make a portion of your purchase become a gift to VHUMC? It is very easy: log into your Amazon account through smile.amazon.com and then shop as you normally do! The first time, you will need to choose "Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church Foundation." Then, every time you log in this way, Amazon will process a donation to the General Fund of the church. It really is that easy. Please contact John Sweeney ([email protected]/ 769-0101) with any questions you may have.

Summer Art Camp
Looking for a fun Art Camp for your children? The COA is offering an Art Workshop the week of July 15-22. The older kids will meet from 12:30-2:00 pm and younger kids (rising 1st grades-3rd grades) will meet from 2:00-3:30 pm. Each day will offer a different theme from cartoon creations, canvas painting, and more. This is a great way for your children to express their creativity while bringing home some awesome art work each day. The camp fee is just $110 and includes all supplies. To register, contact Ellen Bryant ( [email protected]) or click the link.

High School Creative Writing Class
High School Students, sign up now for a creative writing class just for you. Not only will this class be beneficial for high school English classes, but also a fun way to learn how to blog, express yourself better, and help with writing those required essays for college scholarships! This class is taught by a former Jefferson County school teacher who has written two devotional books herself. Class begins July 11 from 1:00-2:00 pm for four consecutive Thursday afternoons. Notes will be available if you need to miss a class. The class fee is $70. Click the link to register.

Livestream is Coming Soon
Livestreaming is finally coming to VHUMC!
For a few years, we have been wanting the ability to broadcast our worship services over the internet. To broadcast, we knew that we would need better cameras, a better mixing console, and the magic computer that reduces trillions of bits of data into a stream that can go out over any internet cable. And, all of that costs money.

Now, with the great help of an anonymous donor, we have the funds that we need to get the necessary equipment and licenses. We are very grateful and plan to have everything installed and running in the next few months. Of course, we will also need video operators. If you would be interested in this great technology, please contact Peyton Chandler ([email protected] / 306-3591).

Look for more information on how to watch our livestream broadcasts coming soon. We are very excited about how this new feature will help you in your spiritual journey.
Goat Yoga
Come and join us on Wednesday, July 24, for Goat Yoga on the farm! The cost is $20 for a one-hour Yoga class, a classy ride in the church van, and fun with friends and baby goats. You can bring your own mat, borrow one from the Lighthouse, or rent one at the farm for an additional fee ($3). Make your reservation early because events fill up fast! Ages 12-112.

We will meet in the Lighthouse Lobby at 5:15 pm and take the church van to a farm in Helena for the Yoga class with a certified instructor and baby goats.

Volunteers Needed
Are you an early bird? Do you like getting the worm? The Health, Wellness, & Recreation Ministry is looking for people like you! We are in need of early morning volunteers to work the Lighthouse desk. Shifts are from 6:30-8:00 AM or 7:00-8:00 AM, Monday through Friday. We have weekly, bi-weekly and monthly opportunities available. You will receive a special nametag, a FREE Lighthouse membership, and get to hang out with some really cool people. Please contact Alli McGill ([email protected]) or Kealee Burrow ([email protected]) to volunteer.
A Special Thank You from Wesley Camp
One of our own members, Kay Davis, has a very close relationship with Wesley Camp. She wants to give a special thank you for all the efforts of our Vacation Bible Camp children to raise money for Wesley Camp! She also said the Latvian friends that she's told are very excited and so appreciative. They say "PALDIES" (thank you in Latvian).
Upward Flag Football and Cheer Registration
Upward Flag Football and Cheer registration has begun! This league is for boys and girls K4-4th Grade who want to play flag football or cheer and learn the basics of the sports experienced in a Christ-centered atmosphere. Practices will be once a week on either a Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday evening starting the week of Sept. 2. Games will be on Saturday mornings starting on September 14. The cost is $105 per participant and includes uniforms. The league also offers multi-child family discounts.

You can register online at the link below or in person at the VHUMC Lighthouse. We are looking forward to seeing your family participate with us this fall! For any questions about the league or season, please contact Miles Erbe ([email protected] / 769-0134).

Traveling Light
Weary travelers. You've seen them - everything they own crammed into their luggage. Staggering through terminals and hotel lobbies with overstuffed suitcases, trunks, duffels, and backpacks. Backs ache. Feet burn. Eyelids droop. We've all seen people like that. At times, we are people like that - if not with our physical luggage, then at least with our spiritual load. We all lug loads we were never intended to carry. Fear. Worry. Discontent. No wonder we get so weary. We're worn out from carrying that excess baggage. Wouldn't it be nice to lose some of those bags?

That's the invitation of Max Lucado. With the Twenty-third Psalm as our guide, let's release some of the burdens we were never intended to bear. Using these verses as a guide, Max Lucado walks us through a helpful inventory of our burdens. May God use this Psalm to remind you to release the burdens you were never meant to bear.

Be sure to register for this free resource! Text rightnow vhumc to 41411 to get your link to create a profile. Then watch 2,000+ Bible studies, talks, kids shows, youth studies, and movies. You can also contact Suzanne Scott-Trammell ([email protected]) if you have questions.

Ongoing Outreach
Food Pantry
Food pantry families were interviewed by the food bank a few months ago and the results show us how important our food pantry is to these families. 72% of the families would run out of food by the end of a month if it weren't for the food pantry. Click the link to understand more of how we help our families. Thank you for your continued support of this mission.

Oak Mountain Mission
Oak Mountain Mission needs furniture, especially tables and chairs. Please call Roddy (685-5757) to arrange for a pick-up. They are always in need of cookware, dishes, and linens. These may be put into the three bins around the church. They especially help families who have lost their homes to fires, floods, and foreclosures. Please help the mission help them. Thank you.

Hope Inspired Ministries - Night of Comedy
Join one of our mission partners, Hope Inspired Ministries, for a night of comedy featuring Jeff Allen. Jeff's rapid-fire humor, which centers on marriage and family, is a hit with all ages. A live comedy favorite, Jeff has appeared on Showtime, Comedy Central, VH1, and more. Jeff's Dry Bar Comedy videos went viral earlier this year, introducing him to tens of millions of new fans worldwide. At times both gut-wrenching and hilarious, Jeff's one-man show, The America I Grew Up In, offers a unique view into his crazy world.

The event will be Monday, July 15, at NorthPark Baptist Church in Trussville. Doors will open at 6:00 pm, with the event beginning at 7:00 pm. General Admission tickets are $25 and may be purchased through the link below. For more information, you may contact HIM at (334) 649-4330.
