Lifestyles of the
Small and Squishy
Friday, July 12
9 a.m.-noon
Insects eat plants-let us count the ways! There is a surprising and incredible variety of ways to eat plants, ranging from chewing them to sucking out their juices (like mosquitoes do to us), to mining trails through the insides of leaves, to creating tumors on plants that create fresh food.
In this adult/educator workshop we will explore different ways animals eat plants and discuss the adaptations behind some of these methods of feeding. Then we will work on finding examples of herbivores in nature to provide you with some tools for contributing to science by looking closely at the small things feeding on plants in your backyards.
Ages 18 and up.

The Wild Side:
What on Earth is a Leaf Miner?
Imagine that the upper surface of a leaf is the ceiling of a room, and the lower surface is the floor. Leaf miners are larvae of tiny moths, beetles, and flies that "mine" through the middle of leaves, eating along the way. Some of these insects stay in the mines until they are adults, and some mine as young larvae, then feed on the surface (or in a rolled leaf) as older larvae. There are over 100 species of
leaf miners in the park, and some may be new species!
Want to learn more about these and other amazing little creatures, and see for yourself that they really do exist? Join us for this month's program, featuring tiny insects,
