INDEPENDENCE DAY-JULY 4, 1776

Thursday, July 4, is the 243rd anniversary of the adoption of the American Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress. The Declaration was written primarily by Thomas Jefferson as a member of a committee that included John Adams and Benjamin Franklin. The Declaration is considered to be one of the most important documents ever written that continues to influence the thoughts of humankind. Jefferson described the Declaration of Independence as "an appeal to the tribunal of the world." The principles embodied in the declaration have resounded throughout the world. Reformers, wherever they may be or whatever their cause, have reminded the public that "all men are created equal." Wherever people have fought against undemocratic regimes, they have argued, using Jefferson's words, that governments derive "their just powers from the consent of the governed."

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness, that to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness".
Pontifical Prayers And Blessings Offered

Last Sunday the parish of St. Sarkis Church offered Pontifical Prayers and Blessings on the occasion of the 24th anniversary of the election and consecration of His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Holy See of Cilicia.  His Holiness was consecrated Catholicos of Cilicia on July 1, 1995. During the past twenty-two years under his leadership a new page in the history of the ancient Holy See of Cilicia has been filled with many accomplishments that include new initiatives for educational religious and cultural program, strengthening the Armenian identity in the Diaspora, promoting and supporting ecumenism and interfaith relations, supporting the Armenian Cause, and launching and completing many new construction projects to facilitate the work of the Catholicosate.

The New Church Organ Blessing

On Sunday June 30, 2019 the parishioners of St. Sarkis Church enjoyed the singing of the Holy Mass with the new organ. His Eminence Archbishop Anoushavan Tanielian, Prelate blessed the new organ following church services. 
Gladzor Presented to Mr. Boudakian


His Eminence Archbishop Anoushavan, Prelate presented to  Mr. Antranig Boudakian  a copy of  Gladzor, the yearbook of Armenian Theological Seminary in Antelias. Mr. Boudakian sponsored the publication of the yearbook this year. Anoushavan Serpazan acknowledged the generosity of Mr. Boudakian and convayed to him the blessings of His Holines Aram I.

Christianity 101, Part 1
On Friday, June 28th, 2019 St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church organized an educational seminar for the Salt & Light Youth Group facilitators and Sunday School teachers. The theme of the seminar was "Christianity 101" and was lead by Fr. Nareg Terterian, Pastor.

Almost every Armenian knows that Armenian Apostolic Church is one of the oldest Christian churches and we are all very proud of the fact that the Kingdom of Armenia adopted Christianity as its official national religion in 301 AD. Der Nareg felt the need to hold a seminar about Armenian Christianity because he believes in the need to educate his parish about its faith, how it originated, and what it really means to be an Armenian Orthodox Christian.

Der Nareg started with the fact that the Bible is comprised of two parts which are the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament foreshadows the New Testament where the scriptures were fulfilled. In order to understand why Jesus, the Son of God, came into this world it is important to understand why a Savior was needed. The discussions mainly concentrated on the Old Testament which consists of 39 books and is divided into 3 parts being the Pentateuch (The Torah the first 5 books), Writings (historical books and wisdom books) and Prophets (major and minor). Der Nareg talked about the Creation and how humanity was broken when sin entered the world because of rebellion. He emphasized that in order to understand God's message we should approach the stories in the Bible by considering the context and the time period they were written in. He also went over the Ten Commandments and the importance of having a relationship with God to understand His will. Examples were presented how the word of God has been manifested in our Armenian Sharagans by direct quotations from Bible verses into music and prayer that we celebrate on feast days and every Sunday during Badarak. Finally, Der Nareg reminded how parents need to teach children and youngsters about God. Our Pastor emphasized how we can get closer to God by prayer and spending time with Him by reading His Word, the Bible, and continuing studying, prayer, and fellowship.

It was a very educational and enjoyable two hours spent with a great group of peers and friends. We all felt very blessed to have a spiritual leader in Der Nareg who has both the knowledge and the faith to educate us about the foundations of our Armenian Christian faith.

THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE ROMANS (7.25-8.11)
Thanks be to God-through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God's law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin. Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man, in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit.  
Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.
 
 
ՊՕՂՈՍ ԱՌԱՔԵԱԼԻ ՆԱՄԱԿԸ ՀՌՈՄԱՅԵՑԻՆԵՐՈՒՆ (7.25-8.11)
Ապա ուրեմն ես ինքս միտքով Աստուծոյ օրէնքին կը ծառայեմ, իսկ մարմնով՝ մեղքի օրէնքին: Եթէ այդպէս է, կը նշանակէ թէ անոնք որ Քրիստոս Յիսուսի միացած են՝ դատապարտութեան ենթակայ չեն, քանի մարմնաւորապէս չեն ապրիր, այլ հոգեւորապէս: Որովհետեւ Հոգիին օրէնքը զիս Քրիստոս Յիսուսի միացնելով կենդանացուց եւ ազատեց մեղքի եւ մահուան ենթակայութենէն: Արդարեւ, ինչ որ օրէնքը չէր կրնար ընել, մարդկային բնութեան տկար ըլլալուն պատճառով, Աստուած իրագործեց աշխարհ ղրկելով իր Որդին, որ մեղքը յաղթահարելու համար մեր մեղանչական բնութիւնը իր վրայ առաւ եւ իր մարմնին մէջ դատապարտեց մեղքը, որպէսզի մենք որ հոգեւորապէս կ՚ապրինք եւ ո՛չ մարմնաւորապէս, կարենանք լրիւ գործադրել օրէնքին արդար պահանջքները: Անոնք որ միայն իրենց մարմնական պահանջներով կը ղեկավարուին, անոնց մտածելակերպը մարմնական է. մինչդեռ անոնք որ Հոգիին թելադրած ձեւով կ՚ապրին, անոնց մտածելակերպը հոգեւոր է: Մարմնականը խորհիլը մահ կը պատճառէ, մինչ հոգեկանը խորհիլը՝ կեանք եւ խաղաղութիւն: Մարմնականին կառչած միտքը Աստուծոյ թշնամի է, որովհետեւ Աստուծոյ օրէնքներուն չի՛ հնազանդիր, ո՛չ ալ կրնայ հնազանդիլ: Ահա թէ ինչու անոնք որ մարմնականին կը հետեւին՝ Աստուծոյ հաճելի չեն կրնար ըլլալ:  
Եթէ իրապէս Աստուծոյ Հոգին ձեր մէջ կը բնակի, կը նշանակէ թէ դուք այլեւս մարմնին չէք հետեւիր, այլ հոգիին: Իսկ ով որ Քրիստոսի հոգին չունի, անոր   
չի՛ պատկանիր: Եթէ Քրիստոս ձեր մէջն է, թէպէտեւ ձեր մարմինները պիտի մեռնին, որովհետեւ մեղանչեցիք, սակայն Սուրբ Հոգին դարձեալ կեանք պիտի տայ ձեզի, որովհետեւ արդարացաք: Այսինքն, եթէ Աստուծոյ Հոգին ձեր մէջ կը բնակի, Աստուած,  
որ Յիսուս Քրիստոսը մեռելներէն յարուցանեց, Իր Հոգիին միջոցաւ որ ձեր մէջ կը բնակի՝ պիտի կենդանացնէ նաեւ ձեր մահկանացու մարմինները:
 
 
THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MATTHEW (12.38-45)
Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, "Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you."  
He answered, "A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here. The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and now one greater than Solomon is here.  
"When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, 'I will return to the house I left.' When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation."
 
 
ՅԻՍՈՒՍ ՔՐԻՍՏՈՍԻ ԱՒԵՏԱՐԱՆԸ ԸՍՏ ՄԱՏԹԷՈՍԻ (12.38-45) 
Այն ատեն օրէնքի ուսուցիչներէն եւ փարիսեցիներէն ոմանք ըսին Յիսուսի. «Վարդապե՛տ, կ՚ուզենք որ հրաշք մը գործես»: 
Յիսուս անոնց պատասխանեց. «Աստուծոյ անհաւատարիմ չա՛ր սերունդ. նշան մը կ՚ուզէք. բայց Յովնան մարգարէին պատահած հրաշքէն զատ ուրիշ նշան պիտի չտեսնէք: Եւ ինչպէս Յովնան երեք օր ցերեկ ու գիշեր կէտ ձուկին փորին մէջ անցուց, նոյնպէս ալ մարդու Որդին երեք օր ցերեկ ու գիշեր պիտի մնայ երկրի ընդերքին մէջ: Դատաստանի օրը նինուէցիները ձեզի դէմ պիտի ելլեն եւ դատապարտեն ձեզ, որովհետեւ անոնք Յովնանի քարոզութեամμ զղջացին իրենց մեղքերուն համար: Եւ ահա, Յովնանէն աւելի մեծ մէկը կայ հոս: Դարձեալ, Դատաստանի օրը հարաւի թագուհին պիտի ելլէ եւ դատապարտէ ձեզ, որովհետեւ ան իր հեռաւոր երկրէն եկաւ Սողոմոնի իմաստուն ուսուցումները լսելու համար: Եւ ահա, Սողոմոնէն աւելի մեծ մէկը կայ հոս: 
«Երբ չար ոգի մը դուրս կ՚ելլէ մարդու մը մէջէն, կ՚երթայ եւ անջրդի վայրեր կը շրջի՝ հանգիստ տեղ մը գտնելու համար: Եւ երμ չգտնէ, ինքնիրեն կ՚ըսէ. "Ելլեմ երթամ իմ տունս, ուրկէ ելայ": Ուստի կը վերադառնայ իր նախկին տունը եւ զայն կը գտնէ պարապ, մաքուր եւ յարդուած: Ապա կ՚երթայ եւ կը բերէ իրմէ աւելի չար եօթը այլ ոգիներ, որոնց հետ ներս մտնելով՝ կը բնակի հոն, որով այդ մարդուն վերջը իր նախկին վիճակէն շատ աւելի գէշ կ՚ըլլայ: Գիտցէք որ նոյնը պիտի պատահի նաեւ այս չար սերունդին»:

DISCOVERY OF RELICS OF ST. GREGORY
On Saturday, July 6, the Armenian Church observed one of the three feast days dedicated to St. Gregory the Illuminator (Krikor Lousavorich): the discovery of his relics. St. Gregory is considered to be the "Apostle of Armenia," and the patron saint of the Armenian Church. He preached throughout Armenia, built churches, including the great cathedral in Etchmiadzin, established the first canon laws, wrote many prayers, and organized the liturgical services.

After years of evangelizing, St. Gregory sought solitude and an ascetic life. He retired to a cave at Mount Sepouh where he died in solitude. Shepherds found his body and without realizing his identity they buried him under a pile of stones. Later a hermit, known as Garnik of Pasen, who was a disciple of Gregory, saw a vision and went to Mount Sepouh and found the burial site. He took the saint's remains to the village of Tordan for burial where King Trdat was buried.

Relics from the right hand of St. Gregory, encased in a golden arm, are at the Holy Mother See of Etchmiadzin and the Holy See of Cilicia. The Catholicoi mix the new Muron (holy oil) with the old Muron with the golden arm of St. Gregory.

ST. DANIEL THE PROPHET AND COMPANIONS SHADRACH, MESCHACK, & ABEDNEGO
On Tuesday, July 9, the Armenian Church commemorates Daniel the Prophet and his companions. Daniel and his youthful companions Shadrach (Setrak), Meshack (Misak), and Abednego (Apetnakov), found favor with the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar after their captivity. When the king gave orders for a large statue of himself that would be worshipped like a god, Daniel and the three youths refused. Shadrack, Meshack, and Abednego were put into a large furnace. The flames shot out of the furnace and attacked those standing nearby, but the three boys walked in the flames without harm. Seeing this, the king ordered their release from the furnace, and he became a convert. (See the Book of Daniel, chapters 1 to 3 for the full account).
Obituary
- Mrs. MELINE ZAKARIAN, passed on Thursday, June 27, 2019. A Wake service was held on Sunday, June 30, 2019. Funeral services were held on Monday, July 1, 2019, all at Glascott Funeral Home. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family. May she rest in peace.
