Letter from the President & CEO

Dear Members:

As we approach the nation's Independence Day celebration, Liberty and Freedom become a focal point in discussions about American exceptionalism.  This national conversation also tends to quickly devolve into "tribal" partisanship that simply does not speak to the majority of Americans.  The dilution of these concepts as talking points for political parties, rather than unalienable rights, is problematic.  So, perhaps it is time for business leaders to re-frame the conversation?  

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed...
(Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776).
 
What can business do?  The best form of public assistance is a vibrant economy that produces jobs with great wages and endless career opportunities for those that are willing to compete to win. So, t ell your business success story over and over and over to your employees and the public.   And when it comes to political leaders, hold them accountable for sharing your values in word and deed.  

This is an election year for all 140 members of the Virginia General Assembly - so please open your factories for tours; hold MFG Day events with your employees and community leaders on October 4; and support elected officials that share your commitment to individualism, competitiveness, Liberty and Freedom.  For more information on how to support pro-manufacturing Senators and Delegates, email me at [email protected].

VMA Women in Manufacturing 



The VMA is proud to announce the launch of its "Women in Manufacturing Leadership Program" as part of its VISION 2020 strategic plan.  The goal of this program is to attract, retain and advance women in MFG and recognize women at all levels of manufacturing, from the factory floor to the C-suite. 

How Do You Get Involved?
The VMA will be forming a Women in MFG Leadership Council that will drive our three-year strategic plan to create professional development programs for women in manufacturing, grow STEP Ahead Program participation throughout Virginia and create programs that will attract young women to our industries. Step Out and Celebrate Virginia Women!
Join the VMA on November 19 at the Williamsburg Lodge Conference Center, Williamsburg VA, for the 2019 STEP Ahead Award recognition luncheon to recognize women from Virginia who have been nominated for the 2019 STEP Ahead Award.  The luncheon will take place in conjunction with the Virginia Competitiveness Forum.  This year's Keynote Speaker is Kristin Cavallo, CEO, The Martin Agency - the ad agency for Geico and creator of the Great OREO Cookie Quest Help us celebrate women in manufacturing and support our goal of building the next generation of leaders that will assure the competitiveness of Virginia's 6,000 manufacturers.

Mark your calendars for Manufacturing Day 2019 on Friday, Oct. 4!  While traditionally held the first Friday of October, we encourage manufacturers to open their doors to students, parents, and educators any day during "Manufacturing Week" or "Manufacturing Month" to showcase what modern manufacturing is all about.  Be sure to register your event and check out the host toolkit available at www.mfgday.com.
