Greetings!
The 2019 AHIMA Ballot was announced at the beginning of June, and included one candidate for President/Chair-Elect and one candidate for Speaker-Elect of the House of Delegates.
The CHIA Board of Directors appreciates the hard work and thoughtful process that the AHIMA Nominating Committee must engage in to identify
qualified
and
willing
candidates for Board positions. We recognize the need for change, and that change will sometimes be messy, and that effective and long-lasting change requires transparency and communication.
The AHIMA ballot announcement raised concerns from AHIMA members because it is a distinct departure from the traditional ballots, in that only one candidate for each of these positions was selected by the AHIMA Nominating Committee, and a write-in option was not available. It is not uncommon to expect candidates for Board service to support the mission, vision, values, and strategic plan of the organization they wish to serve as they become an active part of the organization’s leadership team.
- In fact, in June 2018 the CHIA HOD reviewed and discussed a similar competency-based approach for Board positions as delineated in Race for Relevance (Coerver and Byers, 2011, p. 32).
The CHIA Board is providing information about the discussions around this issue through Statements from AHIMA, information from the All Delegate meeting and recommendations being made from other CSAs. This information is not meant to persuade our members in any direction, rather it is meant to provide a framework for discussion about the process and to encourage our members to vote.
- On June 12, 2019 during the AHIMA All Delegate call, the AHIMA Board approved a write-in option for the ballot.
The CHIA Board of Directors supports process, communication and transparency – we support the dedicated and service-minded professionals who have agreed to give up time in their very busy lives to help lead AHIMA collaboratively. We ask our members to access the reference links below, read through the information and as always, we ask you to vote.
Your voice is critical, and as we navigate the changes ahead AHIMA will need CHIA’s voice and energy even more.
Respectfully,
CHIA Board of Directors
