Roxbury Alumni In the News

Roxbury Grads' 'Warrior Strong' Group: NJ Might Get Free Veteran Fitness Center
Military veterans could have a free place to work out in Morris County thanks to a non-profit organization founded by a Roxbury High School graduate.

The organization,  Warrior Strong, is considering a Morris Plains site for a fitness center where veterans could be members for no cost, said founder Tom Tice. Warrior Strong currently offers free fitness classes for veterans - in North Jersey and Scranton, Pa. - but is looking to create a more permanent arrangement.

His goal: To "bring back the camaraderie" of military service "on the fitness side" for veterans because having them "come together and having them express themselves emotionally and physically together will help them and show them they are not alone. There are people out there who really care. It's a better option than going to a VA hospital and taking medications."

Tice said he's hoping many people attend the Oct. 20 event, which will take place at Ideal Strength and Fitness, 60 Hanover Ave., Morris Plains, at 9:30 a.m. Non-veterans can attend by paying a $10 donation.

Hundreds of Lake Hopatcong Cleanup Volunteers Needed - Nov 3
As the Lake Hopatcong community prepares for a 60-inch drawdown this fall - done by the state once every five years - the Lake Hopatcong Foundation is calling for volunteers to help remove debris from the exposed lake bed during a Lake Hopatcong Lake-Wide Cleanup to be held on Saturday, Nov. 3.

This year, the Lake Hopatcong Foundation is working in partnership with the Lake Hopatcong Commission to again bring residents together to remove accumulated litter and help make the lake a healthier place.  To coordinate the removal of all the debris, the Foundation will work in partnership with the Morris and Sussex Counties' Clean Communities programs, as well as the Departments of Public Works in Hopatcong, Jefferson, Mt. Arlington, and Roxbury.  Bridgestone Tire will be recycling tires pulled from the lake.

The Foundation is trying to recruit 40-to-50 team leaders and hundreds of volunteers. Local groups and organizations are encouraged to assemble cleanup teams. Click here for more information from the Morris County Government website.
