Message from the County Administrator
Since Hurricane Season began on June 1st, all Camden County residents must make steps to plan ahead for potential tropical weather. Check out the 2019 Hurricane Guide for more information about how you and your family can be better prepared for this hurricane season.
Camden County departments, programs, and employees have been recognized for their hard work and achievements. The National Association of Counties (NACo) has once again recognized Camden County with an Achievement Awards for a program in our Planning & Development Department. Our FY 2019 Budget received recognition from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA).

This is in addition to recognizing the work of 38 Camden County employees and their achievement of reaching a milestone anniversary in 2018. The Information Technology (IT) Department and Kitty Schroeder of the Solid Waste Department were declared Shining Stars through a peer-nomination process.

We are pleased to inform you that District 1 Commissioner Lannie Brant recently became a Certified County Commissioner through the ACCG and the University of Georgia's Carl Vinson Institute of Government's Lifelong Learning Academy. Also noteworthy is the hard work of IT Director Louis Foltzer to receive the designation of a Local Government Chief Information Officer (LGCIO).

19 local residents recently completed our Citizens' Academy and I encourage you to take advantage of a future session. One of the best ways that citizens can get involved with our local government is by participating in this program.

Wishing you a wonderful Independence Day and a safe summer!

Yours for a better Camden,
Steve L. Howard, MPA, ICMA-CM, CPM, CPPO

Fireworks Safety
Kingsland By-Pass Phase I Update
The Kingsland By-Pass Phase I has been moving forward with construction in spite of the recent evening thunderstorms.

The original bridge section constructed over in the early 1970's over I-95 has been removed. In the interest of safety, this was performed at night, when there are lower traffic counts, by diverting all traffic onto the ramps.

New road sections are being constructed and traffic patterns will be continue to change until the road is completed.
With construction continuing, please slow down and watch out for crews and machinery as you travel through the project area. The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) shares work zone safety information on their website. The estimated Phase I project completion is summer 2020.

Extreme Heat Safety
The Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) ready.gov program has information about how you can prepare for extreme heat situations. Extreme Heat often results in the highest number of annual deaths among all weather-related hazards. In most of the United States, extreme heat is defined as a long period (2 to 3 days) of high heat and humidity with temperatures above 90 degrees. In extreme heat, evaporation is slowed and the body must work extra hard to maintain a normal temperature. This can lead to death by overworking the human body. Remember that:

  • Extreme heat can occur quickly and without warning.

  • Older adults, children, and sick or overweight individuals are at greater risk from extreme heat.

  • Humidity increases the feeling of heat as measured by a heat index.
