July 2019
Greetings,

Happy Summer! I was speaking recently with a woman whose parents had a house near the Vermont store. She sought me out to thank me because she first encountered Buddhism through a book she bought in our store years ago. It changed the entire trajectory of her life.

It is always good to get a reminder of the power of books. We never know which of the people walking through our doors might have their life changed by the book they buy today. It could be a child’s first book they are enthused about, or a person learning how to confront death, or a non-fiction reader’s first foray into fiction; there are infinite possibilities.

Summer is a time of reading. Give yourself the gift of time to settle into life changing or just plain fun! Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Enjoy,
Chris Morrow

Brilliant, heartbreaking, tender, and highly original - poet Ocean Vuong’s debut novel is a sweeping and shattering portrait of a family, and a testament to the redemptive power of storytelling written as a letter from a son to a mother who cannot read.

Featured Book of the Month

In this bravura follow-up to the Pulitzer Prize, and National Book Award-winning #1  New York Times  bestseller  The Underground Railroad , Colson Whitehead brilliantly dramatizes another strand of American history through the story of two boys sentenced to a hellish reform school in Jim Crow-era Florida.

Bigotry needs a disguise. It might be cloaked in white bed sheets or it might lurk on the immaculately tended grounds of a school. It existed at the Nickel Academy unbeknownst to most people until the exhumations began on a part of the campus known ominously as Boot Hill. Elwood Curtis was a young black student with a promising future until he accepted a ride in a stolen car and was sent to Nickel, where the state of Florida consigned all their troubled and abandoned boys. Although the new novel by the author of   The Underground Railroad  is set over a century later, the signs that denote a dead end to most black lives in America are still firmly implanted, withstanding the buffets of change, and challenging our comfortable notions that we have come a long way since the Civil War.

July Pre-order Highlight

From the #1  New York Times  bestselling author of  In a Dark, Dark Wood The Woman in Cabin 10 The Lying Game , and  The Death of Mrs. Westaway  comes Ruth Ware’s highly anticipated fifth novel.

When she stumbles across the ad, she’s looking for something else completely. But it seems like too good an opportunity to miss—a live-in nannying post, with a staggeringly generous salary. And when Rowan Caine arrives at Heatherbrae House, she is smitten—by the luxurious “smart” home fitted out with all modern conveniences, by the beautiful Scottish Highlands, and by this picture-perfect family.

What she doesn’t know is that she’s stepping into a nightmare—one that will end with a child dead and herself in prison awaiting trial for murder.

Writing to her lawyer from prison, she struggles to explain the unravelling events that led to her incarceration. It wasn’t just the constant surveillance from the cameras installed around the house, or the malfunctioning technology that woke the household with booming music, or turned the lights off at the worst possible time. It wasn’t just the girls, who turned out to be a far cry from the immaculately behaved model children she met at her interview. It wasn’t even the way she was left alone for weeks at a time, with no adults around apart from the enigmatic handyman, Jack Grant.

It was everything.

She knows she’s made mistakes. She admits that she lied to obtain the post, and that her behavior toward the children wasn’t always ideal. She’s not innocent, by any means. But, she maintains, she’s not guilty—at least not of murder. Which means someone else is.

Full of spellbinding menace and told in Ruth Ware’s signature suspenseful style,  The Turn of the Key  is an unputdownable thriller from the Agatha Christie of our time.
