CSTP's Cindy Kleinfelter Retires PLC

CSTP's long-time Clock Hour Specialist Cindy Kleinfelter retired June 30, 2019. Cindy has spent over 25 years working in school districts and with CSTP to support educators and the clock hour program. She is looking forward to spending more time with her husband and two sons.

CSTP employees, Erin Marzwick and Jeannie Gruber, will be taking over the clock hour program. Erin will be supporting clock hour applicants/instructors with the facilitator application process while Jeannie will work with course attendees who are requesting clock hours.

Learn more about clock hours on the CSTP website.
CSTP's New Clock Hour Process in 2019-2020 CH

Only July 1, 2019, CSTP launched a new electronic system to process clock hours. Educators who want to offer clock hours for an upcoming course or book study can apply online two weeks or more prior to the first meeting.

Course participants have been asking for the ability to pay online and turn their paperwork in electronically. We are happy to report that all of our new courses have an electronic Clock Hour Registration Form and participants will be able to pay for clock hours online with a credit card.

CSTP will begin emailing official clock hour transcripts in August 2019 to those who have an email address on file. If an email address is not on file a transcript will be mailed to the last known address.

If you have any questions regarding clock hour payments or transcripts, please contact Jeannie Gruber at [email protected].
Teacher Leadership Training in Spokane, WA

CSTP is thrilled to partner with NorthEast Washington ESD 101 to grow teacher leadership knowledge and skills and collaborative tools for schools this summer.

Last week we held our first of two summer opportunities with a group of 35 educators from the region. The next opportunity will be August 13 - 14, 2019.

This training utilizes CSTP's Teacher Leadership Framework, which describes the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary to be an effective teacher leader and to work with others within the system in order to improve and change. During this training participants will analyze and reflect on their own strengths, the strengths of their teams, and their plans for improvement and instructional change. Participants leave this session with a solid foundation for understanding teacher leadership with a focus on systems thinking and leading with an equity lens and implementing changes utilizing improvement science.

This opportunity is geared towards schools and/or district teams striving to establish a successful model for continuous improvement. Learning from others and regional partners to create a focused, step by step, actionable plan.

Dates: August 13-14
Location:  NEWESD 101 Talbott Event Center, Spokane, WA
Cost: $125
Included in Registration: lunch and all session materials

4 Spots Left for August 6-7 OSPI NBCT Facilitator Training

To ensure consistency across the state, facilitators of National Board are required to take Facilitator Training prior to hosting a cohort. This two day training hones facilitation knowledge and skills, provides a deeper understanding of the revised National Board process, as well as develops skills in working with adult learners.

This year, National Board Facilitator Training will also include a virtual Pre-Training component that is required for all attending the in-person event. The purpose for the Pre-Training is to equip facilitators with a baseline of prior knowledge to avoid the sit-and-get structure and provide more time for discourse among participants during face-to-face training. The suggested time for the Pre-Training is about 60 minutes depending on the participant's needs. Pre-Training will be hosted as course in the Canvas LMS, which all registrants will be invited to join by OSPI.

When: August 6-7, 2019
Where: Auburn, WA
Cost: $126
Register by July 22

Apply Now for The Civic Engagement Champions AwardCivic

volunteer_divers_happy.jpg The National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) has created The Civic Engagement Champions Award (CEC) to honor the contributions of middle school educators (grades 5-8) who are encouraging their students to be active and responsible citizens. National recognition and $5,000 awards will be made at NASBE's Annual Conference in October to teachers from four states, which represent regional membership areas: Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Washington. Washington's selected teacher will notified by September 15 and be provided travel expenses and hotel accommodations to attend the October 16-19 NASBE Annual Conference.

Educators from all content areas are encouraged to apply. Examples of teachers who may be eligible include:
  • An environmental science teacher might be recognized for a classroom unit that involves students in measuring pollution in a nearby streambed.
  • An English teacher might be honored for a project that involved students in writing persuasive letters to their city council or state legislature, or in publishing an op ed in their local paper on a topic of interest to the class.
  • A history teacher could be recognized for an oral history project that leads to an honest community discussion about school segregation.
  • A journalism teacher could be recognized for a project that would help students learn how to discern fact from fiction and how to evaluate news sources for accuracy and for bias.
  • A government teacher could be recognized for a project in which students identify a local issue that affects them, research possible policy solutions, and then propose the solution to the appropriate governmental body - the city council, the state legislature, or Congress.
Washington State's deadline to apply has been extended to July 12, 2019. Apply now at http://www.nasbe.org/project/civic-engagement-champions/application-and-selection-process/.
