November 10, 2019: Salvation's Marketplace
The world offers a multitude of salvific visions, visions of where placing our attention will best serve us. Over the past several decades the competition for human attention has skyrocketed in ways our ancestors could never have dreamed of. As we find ourselves pulled in so many directions, what are the practices that empower us to stay focused on the joy and justice we choose for our lives?

Sunday, November 10, 12:15-2:00 pm, Fireside Room
Please join us for UUCM's second Death Cafe. Death Cafes are an international phenomenon that began in the UK in 2011. The first one at UUCM was last June. At a Death Cafe, people gather to eat cake and discuss death in a respectful, accessible space. It is a group-directed discussion with no agenda or objectives. It is not a grief support or counseling session, although referrals for that will be available.
This Death Cafe will be facilitated again by UUCM members Ilana Trumbull, an Acupuncturist working with the East Bay End-of-Life Doula Network, and Jan Seagrave, Adult Education Committee Chair. Our objective, like that of all Death Cafes, is "to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives." We will have small-group discussions on several topics, for example, what participants want as their legacies, their love and fear of the aging process, and what they want in their last hours. No one will be led to any conclusion, product or action. Attending a Death Cafe is one step towards opening up a difficult and often taboo topic in America.

November Remarkable People
|
Friday, November 15, 7- 9 pm Fireside Room
This ongoing series gives us time to learn about each other from the interesting stories of individual lives in an evening of sharing and community.
Each person talks briefly, followed by time for questions and general sociability and some sustaining snacks
.
Onno Koelman and Marjorie Hollinger, will be our Remarkable People for November.
Raised in Australia by Dutch parents (but originally born in Houston!), Onno Koelman had an international upbringing. He came back to the USA at age 18 to play water polo and study engineering at Stanford. He's now on his 3rd career after moving through engineering to sales and then starting his own consulting business helping leaders be better leaders and teams be better teams. His lovely wife Lindsey was a UU for many years in San Diego, and introduced Onno and daughter Avalon to the UU community here - and "he loves it!"
You may recognize Marjorie Hollinger as that stalwart, smiling person that anchors the kitchen at times and also shines in the choir. But you may not know about her happy career in public health nursing, her travel adventures, or how she got from upstate New York to life in Marin 20 years ago. She is also a resource for interesting facts about the Great Lakes and good bird walks in Marin.
Come on November 15th to learn more.
Watch this space for more details and the calendar of other Remarkables for the coming year. We have a break across the holiday-busy next months but will resume with more Remarkables in 2020.

UUA Common Read is on!
An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States
by Roxane Dunbar-Ortiz
The Common Read for 2019-2020 is An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States by Roxane Dunbar-Ortiz, published by Beacon Press.
Chosen by the UUA, the Common Read invites participants to read and discuss the same book in a given period of time. UUCM's reading period has begun. It culminates in three discussions of the book after Sunday services on Nov. 24 (Intro & Chapters 1-5), Jan. 5 (Chapters 6-8), and Feb. 2 (Chapters 9-12).
How to get a copy of the book:
- Borrow one of seven copies that are circulating among UUCM members. Check in the Community Room for the Common Read box to find a copy. It's also available at the Marin County Free Library.

Connect through Volunteering
|
|
Are you looking for a way to connect more deeply with UUCM? While Sunday services
instill a sense of community and shared values, getting involved in the behind-the-scenes activities at the church is a great way to meet new people, make a contribution, learn new skills, and grow as a person.
No matter what your interests, experience, and talents, there is a place for you to contribute your energies to make the church a more vibrant community.
Try it, you'll like it!
