2018 Joint Arts Education Conference
November 13, 2018 | Tucson
Every two years, the Arizona Commission on the Arts and Arizona Department of Education co-host a Joint Arts Education Conference (JAEC) with arts educators from all disciplines. This year, the co-hosts have enlisted a highly qualified cohort of experts on creative youth engagement strategies to lead the planning and presentation of JAEC.

Composed entirely of young people from throughout the state, ages 15-18, the JAEC Youth Advisory Board is guiding Arts Commission and Department of Education staff in a collaborative effort to provide Arizona educators, administrators, and teaching artists an opportunity to explore the potential of student-centered learning and develop culturally responsive curriculum.

Conference attendees will acquire new tools and knowledge to support the creation of programs rooted in the principles of creative youth development (CYD), a recent term for a longstanding theory of practice that integrates creative skill-building, inquiry, and expression with positive youth development principles.

2019 Arizona Poetry Out Loud: School Registration Now Open
Register closes Wednesday, October 31, 2018
Registration for 2019 Arizona Poetry Out Loud closes October 31st. Teachers who would like to participate register themselves for the program. Once registered, each participating teacher/school site receives a toolkit, which includes a program guide to help teach recitation and performance and a DVD and companion guide for learning recitation—free of charge.

Visit our Poetry Out Loud page to register your school and learn more.

Poetry Out Loud seeks to foster the next generation of literary readers by capitalizing on the latest trends in poetry – recitation and performance. The program builds on the resurgence of poetry as an oral art form, as seen in the slam poetry movement and the immense popularity of rap music among youth. Poetry Out Loud invites the dynamic aspects of slam poetry, spoken word, and theater into the English class. Through Poetry Out Loud, students can master public speaking skills, build self-confidence and learn about their literary heritage.

Participating teachers receive free multimedia curriculum materials – a poetry anthology, audio guide, teachers’ guide, posters and comprehensive website (www.poetryoutloud.org) all aligned to national standards – augmenting their regular poetry curriculum with poetry recitation and a classroom-level competition. School-level recitation champions compete to advance to the regional, state and then national levels.
