YLC September 2018 Monthly Update
President’s Message

Dear Young Lawyers, I would like to start by sending thoughts and prayers to those recently affected by Hurricane Florence. Although experts agree that we missed the brunt of the storm, Virginians were still forced to deal with tropical storm-like weather, flooding and tornados. The YLC’s Emergency Legal Services Committee (ELS) immediately responded, implementing our Emergency Legal Services Plan so that lawyers around Virginia could readily address the legal needs of those affected communities. Additionally, for the first time, virginia.freelegalanswers.org was able to provide an online platform to provide emergency legal assistance. There currently are volunteer opportunities to provide pro-bono legal services in response to declared disasters as well as to assist with revising and updating certain practice areas in the ELS Manual. If you are interested in assisting, please contact Lauren Parrish at parrish@vsb.org .

This past weekend, the YLC hosted over sixty young lawyer leaders at its annual Leader’s Institute in Richmond, Virginia. Past YLC President and Past ABA President Robert Grey and VSB Immediate Past-President Doris Causey gave inspiring talks on leadership, work-life balance, and the importance of YLC activities. Young lawyer leaders also participated in panels on programming; social media and publications; diversity and inclusion; and, the district representative program. The weekend was an excellent opportunity to brainstorm, collaborate and begin programming work for the bar year. If you are interested in getting involved or becoming a YLC leader in the future, visit our website for more information.
