Week of 7/1/19
Increase safety awareness during heavy holiday travel
The Fourth of July is one of the most popular times for a road trip. But vehicles won't be the only things hitting the road over the holiday. "Active transportation," (bicycle and pedestrian) traffic also increases.

All travelers need to remember to share the road, particularly during high-traffic holiday travel times. Safety is everyone's responsibility.

Motorists

  • Stop for pedestrians in crosswalks, even if they are not marked.
  • Be vigilant. Pedestrians, particularly children, can be hard to see, especially at night or in bad weather.
  • Avoid passing vehicles stopped in the street. They may be allowing pedestrians to cross.
  • Watch out for "distracted" pedestrians - those using cell phones and/or wearing earbuds, for example.

Pedestrians

  • Keep alert. Avoid using electronics that distract you from the road.
  • Use crosswalks whenever possible.
  • Never assume motorists or bicyclists can see you. Attempt to make eye contact.
  • Watch for vehicles entering/exiting driveways or backing up.

Bicycles

  • Wear a properly fitted helmet at all times.
  • Do not use a cell phone or listen to music while biking.
  • Never assume motorists or pedestrians can see you.
  • Obey all traffic laws, signs and signals.
