AWA Steamboat!

An events-packed time in Steamboat Springs gave AWA artists and patrons the opportunity to attend two art demonstrations, paint, sketch, and sculpt at a riverside botanical park and a private ranch surrounded by snow-topped mountains, and enjoy a lively reception hosted by the Steamboat Art Museum. An all-day Symposium on Women in the Arts was enthusiastically received by a full house and the perfect end to a perfect art and artist-filled week.

The museum staff was gracious, generous, and supported us every step of the way. We can't praise them enough. Our amazing Show Chair, Shirley Stocks, worked closely with us for the past year on everything from hiring models to scouting hotels. We were fortunate to have had these partners whose contributions made the show so successful.

Purchase Award

We were so honored to have had the Richard Galusha and Shirley Stocks Purchase Award for the AWA show at the Steamboat Museum. Richard and Shirley underwrote this award, and the work of art they chose was an oil by Heide PressePursuing a Dream. This beautiful painting will now reside in the permanent collection of the Steamboat Art Museum.

Congratulations to Heide on her special honor and our deepest thanks to Richard and Shirley for their generosity.
Our New Website!

Have you seen AWA's new website? We think it's fabulous; fresh and relevant. We were able to include lots of images. It's a work in progress that we'll be refining over the next few weeks. Thanks go out to Ted Angel, who designed our new site. Ted also designs our museum catalog and AWA's magazine ads. He did a great job of capturing the beauty and spirit of our organization and its members.

Booth
BOOTH MUSEUM 2020!!!

Our next museum show, Making Their Mark: America Women Artists, will be at the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville, GA, May 23 - August 23, 2020.

This is an outstanding museum about an hour from Atlanta. The museum is dedicated to the Western United States and houses the largest permanent exhibition space for Western Art in the country, with examples of early Western artists, as well as contemporary artists like Ed Mell, Thom Ross, Donna Howell-Sickles, Kim Wiggins, and others. AWA's show is not a western-themed show; we want artists to submit their best works, regardless of theme or style.

AWA had a show at the Booth in 2015, and the museum purchased a number of major works from our members. Show Chair Lisa Gleim is working closely with the Booth staff  to make this a sensational show.

There will be 110 works in the show. We are organizing a collector's home tour, art social opportunities, portfolio reviews, a workshop, and a Symposium on Women in the Arts. More news is coming soon.

The application period for the show will be November 13, 2019 - January 20, 2020.
Maximum size for 2D works is 40" on the longest side, and 3D works are limited to 200 lbs with no size limit.

2020 is the 100th anniversary year of Women getting the Vote!

2019 Pendleton Round-Up Poster Artist

The Pendleton Round-Up is excited to announce the selection of cowgirl artist and AWA Master/Heritage Member Donna Howell-Sickles as its 2019 rodeo poster artist! Howell-Sickles is an award-winning artist from Saint Jo, TX, known for her colorful, energetic and joyful depictions of the American cowgirl. Donna's work is included in prestigious museum and prominent private collections. Her art is carried by galleries across the West. A book, Cowgirl Rising, celebrates her works. Donna was selected as a member of the Cowgirl Hall of Fame in Fort Worth, TX, in recognition of her powerful portrayals of historic and contemporary cowgirls. Donna is also the first woman artist in the history of the rodeo to be selected to create the annual poster.

Donna attributes her love of the cowgirl and western imagery to a vintage postcard of a cowgirl on a horse captioned, "Greetings from a Real Cowgirl from the Ole Southwest." Inspired by the charm and confidence of the woman in the image, Donna has made the iconic cowgirl -  and all that she stands  for - the central theme in her contemporary Western settings of mixed-media artwork.

"Employing a bold palette of vibrant colors and dynamic visual movement," observed Round-Up Publicity Director Pat Reay, "Donna is a perfect fit to capture the color and drama of the Pendleton Round-Up. There is no better embodiment of the confident, exuberant, fearless and playful spirit of Donna's cowgirls than the members of the Pendleton Round-Up Court celebrated in the poster. Paired with the iconic colors of the Round-Up's bucking chutes and the historic TiPi Village, Donna has created a masterful poster."

"The historic Pendleton Round-Up," Donna comments, "is rich with iconic images, so choosing just one for a poster was a challenge. Portraying a Round-Up queen in a posture of welcome and celebration atop one of the red bucking chute gates of the arena, surrounded by the triangles of the Tipi Village, seemed to be a good solution. The red roses around her hat underscore the beauty of the entire event. I look forward to attending the Round-Up again in September."

In addition to the basic poster, special limited editions will be available for sale through the  Round-Up store at (541) 276-2553, or visit the Round-Up web site at pendletonroundup.com/shop . Donna will be on hand September 11 - 14 to sign the poster and help celebrate the 109th edition of the Round-Up.

Thank You!

Two remarkable women retired from our Board: Earline Burke and Paula Holtzclaw. Both have provided years of sound advice, financial support, and enthusiasm for AWA.

Earline has been a Board Member since 2015, and has been instrumental in helping us with budgeting, taxes, and the questions that arise over non-profit compliance. Earline was a former IRS agent, and she knows her stuff. She has volunteered to help with the Booth show so we will get to see her again next year in Georgia.

Paula Holtzclaw has been on AWA's Board since 2013!  As our Board Secretary, she turned in meticulous notes from our 2-to-3-hour meetings. She always has a kind word to say, and her attitude reminds us that we are all in this together.

AWA has been fortunate to have had these two dedicated women as members of our Board of Directors. They will be missed. Our sincere thanks to both Earline and Paula for their service!
